Number Bases

A number base is the system used to represent numbers, with base 10 (decimal) being the most common due to human anatomy. The document explains how to express numbers in expanded exponential form and introduces base 5 as an alternative counting system. It also touches on the binary number system (base 2) without further elaboration.

NUMBER BASES

A number base is the number of digits or combination of digits that a system of counting uses to represent numbers. A
base can be any whole number greater than 0. The most commonly used number system is the decimal system, commonly
known as base 10. Its popularity as a system of counting is most likely due to the fact that we have 10 fingers.

The base of any number may be written beside the number. For example, 178 is read as 17 base 8.

Write the following numbers using the expanded exponential form

1) 2325 = 2 x 103 + 2 x 102 + 2 x 101 + 2 x 100
2) 98 234 = 9 x 104 + 9 x 103 + 2 x 102 + 3 x 101 + 4 x 100

If man had started to count using just one hand, we would probably have a system based on five.
Suppose we had eleven stones. Using one hand to count with, we could arrange them like this:

We can write this number as 215 and we call it ‘two one to the base five. We do not call it ‘twenty-one to the base five’ ,
because the word ‘twenty’ means‘two tens’.

We can also use similar columns to the ones in the decimal or base 10 system

55 54 53 52 51 50
5x5x5x5x5 5x5x5x5 5x5x5 5x5 5 1
3125 625 125 25 5 1
