GOOD DAY,

CLASS!
MATH 8 | LESSON 4
OBSERVE…

LEARNING TARGETS

I CAN solve Multi-Step

Equations using different
Properties of Equality
MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS
A multi-step equation is an equation that
takes two or more steps to solve.
These problems can have a mix of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, or division
SOLVING LINEAR EQUATION IN
ONE VARIABLE
Isolate the variable on one side of the equation.

Make the coefficient of the variable equal to 1

Check by substituting the value of the variable

to the original equation.
LET’S FIND X!
3𝑏 − 4 = 17
LET’S FIND X: 3𝑏 − 4 = 17
Isolate the variable on one side of the equation.

𝟑𝒃 − 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕
𝟑𝒃 − 𝟒 + 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕 + 𝟒
𝟑𝒃 = 𝟐𝟏
LET’S FIND X: 3𝑏 − 4 = 17
Make the coefficient of the variable equal to 1
𝟑𝒃 = 𝟐𝟏
𝟏 𝟏
𝟑𝒃 = 𝟐𝟏
𝟑 𝟑
𝒃=𝟕
Check by substituting the value of
the variable to the original equation.

𝟑𝒃 − 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕
𝒊𝒇 𝒃 = 𝟕 𝟑 𝟕 − 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕
𝟐𝟏 − 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕
𝟏𝟕 = 𝟏𝟕
ASSIGNMENT #4
Solve the following linear equations using
the different Properties of Equality:

𝟏. 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟓 = 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟏𝟕
𝟐. 𝟒 𝟐𝒚 + 𝟑 = −𝟐𝟎
𝟑. 𝟏𝟎 + 𝟏𝟏𝒗 − 𝟑 𝟒𝒗 + 𝟑 = 𝟖
Example 1
