CHAPTER FOUR

DATA ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter deals with data analysis and discussion of findings, that is, it deals with
presentation of data collected for the study.
All data collected and findings were carefully analyzed and discussed, out of the
questionnaire only were carefully filled and returned. The analysis is therefore based on
respondents.

Research question I: what are the effect of alcoholism and drug abuse on the health of
student in Owerri North LGA, Imo State?
Table 1: Alcoholism and drug abuse can increase the risk of cancer among student

From table 1 above show that 57.3% strongly agreed that alcoholism increase the risk of
cancer among students while 19.3% agreed to the respondent and 11.3% strongly disagreed
to the statement from the finding 12% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholism increase
the risk of cancer among student

From table 2 above show that 70% strongly agreed that alcoholism cause liver cirrhosis (liver
failure) among student while 13.3% agreed to the respondent and 10% strongly disagreed to
the statement from the finding 6.7% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholim and drg
abuse cause liver cirrhosis (liver failure) among student

From table 2 above show that 73.3% strongly agreed that alcoholism and drug abuse can
cause impaired judgment (risky behavior) e.g unsafe sex, accident and violence among
student while 7.3% agreed to the respondent and 12.7% strongly disagreed to the statement
from the finding 6.7% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholism and drug
abuse can cause impaired judgment (risky behavior) e.g unsafe sex, accident and violence
among student

From table 4 above show that 59.4% strongly agreed that alcoholism and drug abuse disrupt
brain development, impairing memory, decision making and learning abilities among student
while 23.3% agreed to the respondent and 9.3% strongly disagreed to the statement from the
finding 8% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholism and drug
abuse disrupt brain development, impairing memory, decision making and learning abilities
among student
Research question ii: What are the effect of alcoholism and drug abuse on the moral life of
student in Owerri North LGA?
Table 5: Student addicted to alcohol and abusing of drug will indulge in criminal behaviors
such as theft, violence and robbery?

From table 5 above show that 80% strongly agreed that Student addicted to alcohol and drug
abuse will indulge in criminal behaviors such as theft, violence and robbery while 9.4%
agreed to the respondent and 6.6% strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding 4%
disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted to
alcohol and abusing of drugs indulge in criminal behaviors such as theft, violence and
robbery

abuse obey rules and regulation/authority guiding the community and respect toward the
community leader while 6.7% agreed to the respondent and 53.3% strongly disagreed to the
statement from the finding 30% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that Students addicted to
alcohol and drug abuse do not obey rules and regulation/authority guiding the community
and respect toward the community leader

result to stealing and lying to fund addiction behavior?

From table 7 above show that 54% strongly agreed that students addicted to alcohol and
abusing of drugs loss his or her integrity which often result to stealing and lying to fund
addiction behavior while 24% agreed to the respondent and 6.7% strongly disagreed to the
statement from the finding 14.7% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that students addicted to
alcohol and abusing of drugs loss his or her integrity which often result to stealing and lying
to fund addiction behavior

Table 8: Alcoholism and drug abuse can cause student to neglect their education and
prioritizing alcohol over education with all zeal?

cause student to neglect their education and prioritizing alcohol over education with all zeal
while 26.7% agreed to the respondent and 8% strongly disagreed to the statement from the
finding 8.7% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholism and drug
abuse can cause student to neglect their education and prioritizing alcohol over education
with all zeal
Research question iii: What are the effect of alcoholism and drug abuse on the educational
performance of student in Owerri, Imo State?

drug abuse attends school regularly while 16.7% agreed to the respondent and 53.3%
strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding 23.3% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that students addicted to
alcoholism and drug abuse do not attends school regularly

the dropout rate of student due to academic failure while 18% agreed to the respondent and
5.3% strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding 6.7% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that alcoholism and drug
abuse increase the dropout rate of student due to academic failure

From table 11 above show that 7.3% strongly agreed that student addicted to alcoholism and
drug abuse often score higher grade in WAEC, NECO and JAMB exams while 8.7% agreed
to the respondent and 52% strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding 32%
disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted to
alcoholism and drug abuse often score lower grade in WAEC, NECO and JAMB exams.

drug abuse possesses excellent critical thinking skills and analytical abilities, have good
performance in academics while 7.3% agreed to the respondent and 54.7% strongly disagreed
to the statement from the finding 34% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted to
alcoholism and drug abuse do not possesses excellent critical thinking skills and analytical
abilities, have good performance in academics

Research question iv: What are the effect of alcoholism on the social disposition of
student in Owerri, Imo State?

disagreed to the statement from the finding 8% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted
with drug and alcohol are strained from family bond

Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted to
alcohol and drug commit crime and delinquency

abuse usually make peace with the cultural and moral values of the community while 3.3%
agreed to the respondent and 66% strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding 25.3%
disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that student addicted
with alcohol and drug abuse do not usually make peace with the cultural and moral values of
the community

Research Question v: What are the roles of the church in combating drug abuse and
alcoholism among students in Owerri North LGA, Imo State?

enlightening the student and making provision for better life to the addicted students while
27.3% agreed to the respondent and 22% strongly disagreed to the statement from the finding
13.3% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that church collaborate
with health initiatives and governmental organization to combat drug and alcohol addiction

spiritual reinforcement through prayer vigil and fasting programmed for the student addicted
to drugs and alcohol while 22.7% agreed to the respondent and 14.7% strongly disagreed to
the statement from the finding 10.6% disagreed to it.
Based on the analysis made above it can be therefore, be concluded that church usually
organize moral and spiritual reinforcement through prayer vigil and fasting programmed for
the student addicted to drugs and alcohol
