Identification

PS - This plastic has poor solvent resistance and in fact may dissolve in
aggressive solvents.
- This plastic is used in cosmetics and jewelry boxes because of its
excellent clarity

LDPE - This plastic is known for its extremely high elongation properties.
- What plastic will you use for a squeezable bottle
- What plastic is the material of choice for trash bags

PVAL/PVOH This is a water-soluble polymer and are usually used in water soluble
pouches like in detergent powders.

PVA Base polymer used primarily as an adhesive, specifically for the commercial
white glue

EVOH - This material has the highest usable oxygen barrier of the packaging
polymers
- This material is usually sandwiched between other polymers since it will
lose its superior oxygen barrier in the presence of moisture

EVA Usually used for hot melt adhesives like sticks for glue gun

PVDC - Which plastic has excellent gas and moisture barrier in a single material
- Generic name of Saran

Ionomer - This material has superior heat-seal properties abd can even seal through
dirt or fats
- Generic name of Surlyn

Cellophane This trade name is based on wood cellulose rather than petrochemicals

PLA This is the most used resin in the bioplastics market

PCTFE This material can survive cryogenic temperature and ionizing radiation

PVC - This material is heavily plasticized

- Other than PET, this is another common material for blister shells

PA - This material is widely used for vacuum packaging of cheese and meat
products
- Generic name of Nylon
- Generic name of MXD6
- This material is known for its excellent abrasion and puncture resistance
PTFE This polymer is known for its inertness and low coefficient of friction

ABS - This thermoplastic is used for large shipping/storage cases for military or
industrial applications
- Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

PC Returnable and large water bottles used this material

PEN - This is usually used for retort and hot-fill packaging

- This material might replace glass in critical applications
- This polymer block out UV light completely

PET - This plastic is known for its high tensile strength

- Common material for plastic strapping

PP This plastic is known for its strong live hinge properties

HDPE? This polymer has the highest moisture barrier of any packaging polymer

PAN Generic name of Barex

Bioplastics This is a term used for plastics sources from renewable sources

PUR This polymer is used for foam-in-place systems

MXD6 This particular brand name is commonly used as an oxygen barrier in PET
bottles for beer

K-Resin? PP? This is a common material for heat-shrink neck brands and labels

True/False

T PS is often used for clamshell packaging

T PET can be thermoformed

T LDPE is a soft plastic

T EPS has good insulating properties

F PET can be heat sealed

F PA has a very good moisture barrier

F K-resin has excellent barrier properties

T Cellophane has excellent dead fold properties

F PLA is based from sugar cane

F LDPE has better barrier than HDPE

F HDPE has poor barrier against moisture

T CPP becomes britte at low temperatures

T PA is expensive

T PA is not heat sealable

F Oriented PA can be thermoformed but unoriented PA cannot be thermoformed

T PEN is expensive

T Barex offer excellent resistance to many aggressive solvents

F K-resin are tough, hard and stiff

F Cellophane generates more static than conventional packaging films

T PETG can be extrusion blow molded but PET cannot be

F Since BArex is the only acrylonitrile copolymer maerketed for packaging

purposes, it can only be made into films

F Aclar is usually thermoformed because of its cheap cost

F OPP can be thermoformed

F One major market of PP is in IBM bottles

F OPP can be heat sealed
