The application of artificial intelligence (AI) to civil engineering practice.

Civil engineering is a diverse field that includes the construction, construction and

maintenance of the infrastructure needed by modern society. From bridges and buildings to roads

and water systems, civil engineers form an environment built to meet the needs of communities

around the world (Manzoor et al., 2021). As technology progresses rapidly, there is excitement

and interest in the inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in civil engineering practices. However,

the Civil Engineering Office has implemented an AI-controlled predictive maintenance system to

monitor the structural health of the bridge. The system used AI algorithms to combine

measurement devices with sensor data from bridge sensors such as accelerometers to detect

degradation and predict maintenance requirements (Kapoor et al., 2024). By analyzing and

identifying historical data indicating potential errors, engineers were able to prioritize

maintenance activities, extend the lifespan of assets, and reduce maintenance costs (Tapeh &

Naser, 2023). Prediction systems allowed civil engineering to recognize structural problems

before they become expensive failures or security risks. Implement target maintenance

interventions based on AI controlled knowledge.

The Architecture and Engineering Office has improved the design of the new pedestrian

bridge using AI-driven, generation design tools. The company entered design parameters such as

clamping, load requirements, and material limitations for the generation design software that

generated and evaluated thousands of design alternatives (Harle, 2024). Engineers have met

structural integrity and aesthetic requirements by discovering designs that reduce material use

and simultaneously analysing performance metrics for design identification. Using generative

designs, the company was able to experiment with a variety of design options to identify the best

solutions that would lead to significant material savings without affecting structural performance
or design aesthetics (Baghbani et al., 2022). The resulting pedestrian bridge not only met the

project's requirements, but was recognized for its innovative design approach. Construction

companies have used AI-driven project management systems to improve the construction work

process and reduce project risk. The system used historical project data such as schedule, budget,

and performance metrics to identify potential bottlenecks, delays, and cost overruns (Zhang et

al., 2021). With the help of AI control knowledge, project managers were able to better allocate

resources, predict project risk, implement risk reduction strategies, ensure timely and

inexpensive project delivery. The AI-controlled project management system helped construction

companies reduce risk by improving project outcomes and allowing real-time visibility into

project performance and proactive decision-making (Baghbani et al., 2022). As a result, the

company has increased project success rates, reduced project delays and cost overruns, and

increased customer satisfaction.

The environmental counselling company used algorithms on artificial intelligence to

determine the environmental impact of the proposed infrastructure project on local ecosystems

and communities. The company used AI technologies such as machine learning and geographic

information systems (GIS) to analyze environmental data, predict potential impacts for the

project, and identify reduction measures to mitigate the negative impact (Baghbani et al., 2022).

An AI-controlled environmental impact assessment allowed it to provide project participants

such as consulting companies, government authorities, developers, and community groups. By

including environmental considerations in the project planning and design process, the company

has contributed to reducing potential environmental risks, promoting sustainable development,

and improving commitment and collaboration among stakeholders. These practices illustrate a

variety of applications from civil engineering AI, ranging from predictive maintenance and
generation design to construction project management and environmental impact assessment

(Baghbani et al., 2022). Civil engineers can use AI technology and techniques to optimize

project outcomes, improve decision-making, and manage complex industry challenges.

However, when AI technology is developed, research and development will be carried

out continuously to improve the skills of AI algorithms and tools developed specifically for civil

engineering. This includes developing more complex machine learning algorithms, improving

data analysis techniques, and operating AI systems with existing technical software and

hardware (Harle, 2024). Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into civil engineering offers

significant opportunities to enhance efficiency, innovation, and sustainability throughout the

project lifecycle.
