Assignment - 03: EE340: Electromagnetic Theory (2024-25 Sem II)

The document outlines an assignment for EE340: Electromagnetic Theory, consisting of several problems related to transmission lines, including calculations of reflection coefficients, VSWR, input impedance, and other parameters for various scenarios. It includes specific values for characteristics impedance, load impedance, and operating frequencies for each problem. The assignment requires applying electromagnetic theory principles to solve practical transmission line issues.

Assignment - 03

EE340: Electromagnetic Theory (2024-25 Sem II)

1. A 30-meter-long transmission line having characteristics impedance of 50 Ω operating at 2 MHz is

terminated with a load 𝑍𝐿 = 60 + j40 Ω. If the velocity of propagation (𝑢) on the line is 0.6c, find
the reflection coefficient, VSWR, and input impedance. The velocity of propagation of EM wave in
free space is c = 3×108 m/s.

2. A transmission line of characteristic impedance 600 Ω is terminated in an impedance 400 + j200 Ω.
Calculate the voltage standing wave ratio.

3. A certain transmission line operating at 𝜔 = 10 rad/sec has 𝛼 = 8 dB /m. 𝛽 = 1 rad/m and 𝑍0 = 60

+ j40 Ω and is 2m long. If the line is connected to a source of 10 V, 𝑍𝑔 = 40 Ω and terminated by a
load of 20 + j50 Ω. Determine
(a) the input impedance
(b) the sending end current
(c) the current at the middle line.
V+ and V- can be found by
Io and Vo
4. A 200 V (rms) generator having an internal resistance of 200 Ω is feeding a lossless transmission
line. The characteristic impedance and the length of the line are 200 Ω and 10 m, respectively. The
line terminated in a resistance load of 100 Ω. If the operating frequency is 37.5 MHz, calculate
(a) the current drawn from the generator
(b) the current delivered to the load.
5. The measured attenuation of an air-dielectric coaxial transmission line at 400 MHz is 0.01 dB/m.
Determine the Q and the half-power bandwidth of a quarter-wavelength section of the line with a
short-circuit termination.
6. The standing-wave ratio on a lossless 50 Ω transmission line terminated in an unknown load
impedance is found to be 3.0. The distance between successive voltage minima is 20 cm, and the
first minimum is located at 5 cm from the load. Determine (a) the reflection coefficient Γ, and (b)
the load impedance 𝑍𝐿 . In addition, find (c) the equivalent length (𝑙𝑚 ) and terminating resistance
(𝑅𝑚 ) of a line, such that its input impedance is equal to 𝑍𝐿 .
