Mechanics-2 Solve

The document contains solutions to various solid mechanics problems, including determining reactions, forces in truss members, and forces applied by pliers. It provides calculations for equilibrium conditions and the effects of static friction on different systems. Key results include forces on members AB, AC, EF, GI, and the maximum allowable angle for equilibrium in a pulley system.

Solid Mechanics

Exam-02
Time: 35 minutes Marks-50
1) Determine a) Reaction at D and E (b) find the force on Member AB and AC

Solution: (a) From the right figure (FBD) The equations of equilibrium give
[Σ𝑀𝐸 = 0] 5𝑇 − 20(5) − 30(10) = 0 𝑇 = 80kN
[Σ𝐹𝑥 = 0] ∘
80cos⁡ 30 − 𝐸𝑥 = 0 𝐸𝑥 = 69.3kN

[Σ𝐹𝑦 = 0] 80sin⁡ 30 + 𝐸𝑦 − 20 − 30 = 0 𝐸𝑦 = 10kN
(b)

Next, we draw free-body diagrams showing the forces acting on each of the connecting pins.
[Σ𝐹𝑦 = 0] 0.866𝐴𝐵 − 30 = 0 𝐴𝐵 = 𝟑𝟒. 𝟔𝐤𝐍⁡(𝑻)
[Σ𝐹𝑥 = 0] 𝐴𝐶 − 0.5(34.6) = 0 𝐴𝐶 = 𝟏𝟕. 𝟑𝟐𝐤𝐍⁡(𝑪)

2) Determine the forces in members 𝐸𝐹 and 𝐺𝐼 of the truss shown.

Solution:
+ΣMB = 0:⁡ − (28kips)(8ft) − (28kips)(24ft) − (16kips)(10ft) + J(32ft) = 0
⇒ J = +33kips = 33kips ↑
ΣFx = 0: ⁡Bx + 16 kips = 0 ⇒ Bx = −16 kips ⁡ ⇒ Bx = 16kips ←
+ΣMJ = 0: (28kips)(24ft) + (28kips)(8ft) − (16kips)(10ft) − By (32ft) = 0
⇒ By = +23kips⁡ ⇒ By = 𝟐𝟑𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐬 ↑
From Section nn:
+↑ ΣFy = 0: +23kips − 28kips − FEF = 0 ⇒ FEF = −5kips = 𝟓𝐊𝐢𝐩𝐬⁡𝐂
From Section mm:

+ΣMH = 0: ⁡
(33kips)(8ft) − (16kips)(10ft) + FGI (10ft) = 0
⇒ FGI = −10.4kips ⇒ ⁡FGI = 𝟏𝟎. 𝟒𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐬𝐂

3) For an 80 − N squeeze on the handles of the pliers, determine the force 𝐹 applied to the round rod by each
jaw. In addition, calculate the force supported by the pin at 𝐴.

Solution:
∑MA = 0: 80(95) − F(35) = 0 ⇒ ⁡F = 217 N
⁡+↑ ΣF = 0: 217 − A + 80 = 0 ⇒ A = 297 N

4) A 300lb block is supported by a rope that is wrapped 1 2 times around a horizontal rod. Knowing that the
coefficient of static friction between the rope and the rod is 0.15, determine the range of values of 𝑃 for which
equilibrium is maintained.
Ref: Vector Mechanics for Engineers-10th edition (Beer & Johnston) prb-8.103

Solution: 𝛽 = 1 2 1.5 turns = 3𝜋⁡rad. For impending motion of 𝑊 up,
P = Weμs β = (300lb)e(0.15)3π = 1233.36lb
For impending motion of W down,
P = We−μs β = (300lb)e−(0.15)3π = 72.971lb
For equilibrium, 73.0lb ≤ 𝑃 ≤ 1233lb

5) The 20 − lb block 𝐴 hangs from a cable as shown. Pulley 𝐶 is connected by a short link to block 𝐸, which
rests on a horizontal rail. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between block 𝐸 and the rail is 𝜇𝑠 =
0.35 and neglecting the weight of block 𝐸 and the friction in the pulleys, determine the maximum allowable
value of 𝜃 if the system is to remain in equilibrium.

N = 2T + T cos θ ; ⁡F = μs (2T + Tcos⁡ θ)

ΣFx = 0 ⇒ T sin θ = μs (2T + Tcos θ) ⇒ θ = 𝟔𝟎. 𝟔∘
