What lessons or theories or technologies did you learn from the first and second weeks of the lecture?

Educational Technology is defined by Januszewski and Molenda as “A study and ethnical practice of
facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, managing appropriate technological
processes and resources.” Under the title Educational Technology vs Instructional Technology, I have clearly
understood that Instructional technology is the tool, while educational technology is the manual for using that
tool. Moreover, I have learnt about Theory and Practice of using technology for education, Internet Access,
Domain Name Hierarchy and Boolean operators are in the first week.

The second week lessons are how has Ed Tech changed? 5M for Educational Technology that include
machines, materials, men, media and methods. Significance of Educational Technology helps teachers divert
from traditional way of teaching but it requires more time for planning, arranging and evaluating. There are two
ways to use educational technology; in the classroom and out of the classroom. I have also learnt Educational
Technology in School Districts and the Downside of Educational Tech.

Sunday’s Lecture is about Digital Security and footprint, Cyber security, Cyber Security Attacks,
Common online Safety Issues, Digital Well-being, Digital Detox, Digital Diet and Integration with Curriculum.
Digital footprint is the trail of data left behind by a person’s online activities. Under the cyber security, I have
learnt about phishing, malware, ransomware and social engineering and also how I have to prevent privacy in
common online safety issues. The most interesting part is about digital well- being, detox and diet as these
words are familiar in our daily communications.

Why do teachers use these lessons or theories or technologies for?

During and after pandemic, me, as a freelance teacher changes physical classroom to virtual reality
classes. I mostly use video conferencing technology; zoom. I am teaching young learners, age between 8 and
13. For younger students, technology can be used to build fundamental skills to prepare them for future
independent learning. Students can use interactive games to reinforce math, spelling, phonetic and reading
skills. For that, I have to search teaching websites and other software for my teaching. I mostly use search
engine as google and had to type full sentences to search for the websites which I want before knowing well
about Boolean Operators.

The educational technology can be used not only in the classroom but also outside of the classroom
(before or after class). Most of the teachers use educational technology for delivering enrichment, student
engagement and lesson assessment in the classroom. Administrative tasks, such as content sharing, assignment
collection, homework submitting, announcement posting and grading for outside of the class. Educational
Technology helps teachers divert from traditional way of teaching but it requires more time for planning,
arranging and evaluating. It incorporates multi-media and multi device learning environment.
At first, poor knowledge about information technology, I am not sure about how to check domain name
hierarchy. Now, I can easily find the websites according to Top Level Domain (TLDs), Second Level Domain
(SLDs) Third Level Domain (subdomains). Boolean Operators are also very useful in searching websites. It is
connecting key terms used to make our search terms more connected, for better search results. This includes
terms like AND, OR and NOT. These terms are used for making searches more relevant in computer
programming and for online search engines.

How can you use these back in your classroom or how can these lessons or theories or technologies be
beneficial to your students?

I can use the lesson about Internet in the class because most of the children are familiar with the term
“internet” but not familiar with the entire meaning of internet. Internet is a complex network of computers
connected by high-speed communication technologies like satellites, microwave allowing easy and quick access
to a huge amount of information stored at many different locations. On the other hand, using the internet
properly, I have to focus more on digital security wisely. The children should know about digital footprint and
cyber security as well because sometimes they are using their parents mobile, account, etc. I shall give
knowledge about practice of protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. Most of the
attackers impersonate legitimate entities to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information such as
usernames passwords, or financial details.

Reasonable and effective theories for the children is digital well-being, detox and diet. As most of the
kids are addicted to digital, we have to give knowledge about how to reduce using internet. Healthy use of
technology to maintain physical and mental health. Not only to the children but also to their parents and
guardians, we have to share these following facts. They are taking break from digital devices and technology for
a period of time to reduce the negative effects of technology on mental health, spending time in nature,
practicing mindfulness and explain about withdrawal symptoms; irritable, restless and physical symptoms such
as headaches and insomnia.

Moreover, we can teach the children about digital diet such as managing screen time and setting limit on
technology. Suggesting parents to use apps to track screen time or let the kids participating in screen – free
challenges. The lessons for digital plans for school students are also beneficial for today’s classroom. Outdoor
education that encourages students disconnect from their digital devices and engage with nature more than
online class students.

The lessons, theories and technologies which I have learnt are so beneficial to my students because I
could guide and explain them about internet access, domain, cybersecurity and how to protect from
cyberbullying. Moreover, I can give knowledge about digital well-being, digital detox and digital diet as most
of the children these days are addicted to internet. I have known about the downside of the educational
technology. These two weeks lessons are more beneficial for me as I am very beginner to instructional design
and technology. These lessons, theories and technologies can teach not only me but also my students as well.
