Introduction
Device management is a fundamental responsibility of operating systems, enabling efficient

1. Device Drivers

operating system and hardware devices. They translate high-level operating system
commands into low-level instructions that hardware can understand.

1.1 Role of Device Drivers

 Abstraction: Provide a standardized interface, allowing the operating system to


interact with diverse hardware without needing to understand device-specific details.
 Communication: Convert operating system requests (e.g., read, write) into device-
specific commands.
 Initialization and Configuration: Set up devices during system boot or when
devices are connected.
 Error Handling: Detect and manage device errors, reporting issues to the operating
system for appropriate action.

1.2 Types of Device Drivers

 Block Device Drivers: Manage devices that transfer data in fixed-size blocks, such as
hard drives and SSDs. Support operations like reading and writing blocks.
 Character Device Drivers: Handle devices that transfer data as a stream of
characters, such as keyboards and mice. Typically do not use buffering.
 Network Device Drivers: Control network interfaces (e.g., Ethernet, Wi-Fi),
managing packet transmission and reception.
 Virtual Device Drivers: Emulate hardware devices, such as virtual disks in virtual
machines or software-based devices.

1.3 Driver Architecture

 Kernel Modules: Most drivers are implemented as loadable kernel modules, enabling
dynamic loading and unloading without system restarts.
 User-Space Drivers: Some drivers, particularly for USB or other non-critical devices,
operate in user space to enhance safety and reduce kernel crashes, communicating
with the kernel via system calls.
 Layered Structure: Drivers are often organized in layers, with higher-level drivers
(e.g., file system drivers) interacting with lower-level hardware drivers.

1.4 Challenges

 Complexity: Developing drivers requires deep knowledge of both hardware


specifications and operating system internals.
 Stability: Driver errors can cause system crashes or performance degradation, as they
typically run in kernel mode.
 Compatibility: Drivers must support multiple hardware versions and remain
compatible with operating system updates.

 Disk drivers for managing data storage and retrieval.


 Graphics drivers for rendering visuals on monitors.
 Network drivers for enabling internet connectivity.

2. I/O Scheduling Algorithms


I/O scheduling algorithms determine the order in which input/output (I/O) requests, such as
disk reads or writes, are serviced. These algorithms aim to optimize device performance,
minimize latency, and ensure equitable resource allocation among processes.

2.1 Objectives of I/O Scheduling

 Reduce Latency: Minimize the time taken to process I/O requests.


 Maximize Throughput: Handle a high number of I/O operations per unit time.
 Ensure Fairness: Prevent any single process from dominating device access.
 Device Optimization: Account for device-specific characteristics, such as disk seek
time or SSD access patterns.

2.2 Common I/O Scheduling Algorithms

 First-Come, First-Served (FCFS):


o Processes requests in the order they are received.
o Advantages: Simple and inherently fair.
o Disadvantages: Inefficient for mechanical devices like hard disks, as it does
not optimize for seek time, leading to excessive head movement.
 Shortest Seek Time First (SSTF):
o Selects the request closest to the current disk head position to minimize seek
time.
o Advantages: Reduces disk head movement, improving response time.
o Disadvantages: Can starve requests located far from the current head position.
 SCAN (Elevator Algorithm):
o The disk head moves in one direction, servicing requests in order, then
reverses direction upon reaching the disk’s edge.
o Advantages: Balances efficiency and fairness, reducing seek time compared
to FCFS.
o Disadvantages: Requests at the disk edges may experience longer wait times.
 C-SCAN (Circular SCAN):
o Similar to SCAN, but the head moves in one direction only, returning to the
start after reaching the end without servicing requests on the return.
o Advantages: Provides more uniform wait times than SCAN.
o Disadvantages: Less efficient due to the empty return trip.
 LOOK and C-LOOK:
o Variants of SCAN and C-SCAN where the head reverses direction at the last
request in the current direction, rather than the disk’s edge.
o Advantages: Eliminates unnecessary head movement.
o Disadvantages: Requires careful tuning to maintain fairness.
 Deadline Scheduler:
o Assigns deadlines to I/O requests, prioritizing those nearing expiration to
prevent starvation.
o Advantages: Ensures timely processing, ideal for real-time systems.
o Disadvantages: Increased complexity in implementation.
 NOOP (No Operation):
o Places requests in a simple FIFO queue with minimal scheduling.
o Advantages: Efficient for SSDs, which lack mechanical latency.
o Disadvantages: Suboptimal for traditional hard disks with seek and rotational
delays.

2.3 Device-Specific Considerations

 Hard Disk Drives (HDDs): Algorithms like SCAN and SSTF optimize for
mechanical constraints, such as seek time and rotational latency.
 Solid-State Drives (SSDs): NOOP or deadline schedulers are preferred due to
uniform access times and lack of mechanical components.
 Network Devices: Scheduling focuses on packet prioritization and bandwidth
management rather than physical movement.

2.4 Use Cases

 Disk scheduling in database servers to optimize read/write performance.


 Real-time multimedia applications using deadline schedulers for consistent I/O
timing.
 SSD-based laptops and servers using NOOP for simplicity and speed.

3. Interrupt Handling
Interrupt handling is the process by which an operating system responds to asynchronous
events generated by hardware devices, such as I/O completion or user input. Interrupts allow
devices to notify the CPU of events without requiring constant polling, improving system
efficiency.

3.1 Types of Interrupts

 Hardware Interrupts: Triggered by devices, such as disk completion or network


packet arrival.
o Maskable Interrupts: Can be temporarily ignored by the CPU (e.g., routine
device events).
o Non-Maskable Interrupts (NMIs): Cannot be ignored, used for critical
events like hardware failures.
 Software Interrupts: Generated by software, such as system calls or exceptions (e.g.,
page faults, division by zero).
 Timer Interrupts: Triggered by the system clock for scheduling, timekeeping, or
periodic tasks.

3.2 Interrupt Handling Process

1. Interrupt Signal: A device sends an interrupt signal to the CPU via an Interrupt
Request (IRQ) line or message-signaled interrupt.
2. Context Save: The CPU saves the current process’s state (e.g., registers, program
counter) to the stack or a designated area.
3. Interrupt Service Routine (ISR):
o The CPU looks up the ISR address in the interrupt vector table and executes it.
o The ISR handles the interrupt (e.g., processes device data, updates status).
4. Interrupt Acknowledgment: The device is notified that the interrupt has been
processed, clearing the interrupt signal.
5. Context Restore: The CPU restores the saved process state and resumes execution.

3.3 Interrupt Handling Mechanisms

 Interrupt Vector Table: A data structure mapping interrupt types to ISR addresses.
 Interrupt Request Lines (IRQs): Dedicated hardware lines for devices to signal
interrupts.
 Interrupt Controllers: Hardware components (e.g., Advanced Programmable
Interrupt Controller, APIC) that prioritize and multiplex interrupts from multiple
devices.
 Deferred Processing: For complex tasks, ISRs delegate work to bottom halves (e.g.,
softIRQs, tasklets, or workqueues) to reduce interrupt latency.

3.4 Challenges

 Latency: Interrupt handling must be fast to avoid delaying critical tasks, requiring
efficient ISRs.
 Priority Management: High-priority interrupts (e.g., timer interrupts) must preempt
lower-priority ones without causing conflicts.
 Scalability: Modern systems with many devices generate frequent interrupts,
necessitating advanced controllers like APIC.
 Reentrancy: ISRs must be designed to handle concurrent or nested interrupts safely.
3.5 Optimizations

 Interrupt Coalescing: Combine multiple interrupts into a single event to reduce CPU
overhead, common in high-speed network devices.
 Polled Mode: For high-frequency interrupts, switch to polling to avoid excessive
context switches.
 Message-Signaled Interrupts (MSI): Use memory-based signaling instead of IRQ
lines for better scalability in modern systems.

3.6 Use Cases

 Handling keyboard input to process user keystrokes in real time.


 Managing disk I/O completion to notify the operating system of data availability.
 Processing network packets for high-speed communication.
