with inserts, gatefold, and reproduction of ephemera.
In the fall of 2008, an idea for the book was submitted to
Siegfried & Roy. A tentative ‘green light’ was given to the
book, based upon them seeing a more fully fleshed-out
outline. Several months later, upon seeing this outline, the
project got the official go-ahead. Siegfried and Roy opened up
their entire archives to Gould and Zimmerman, under the
tireless direction of Lynette Chappell and Joe Clarke.
Both Robert and Diana credit Lynette and Joe with being a
non-stop source of encouragement and assistance in the
publication of the book. The masses of archival material were
housed in a building close to the ‘Jungle Palace’ and Lynette
patiently guided them through the massive amounts of
fascinating material that was for the first time available for
research.
The resulting treasure trove of unique memorabilia started
to inspire and shape the project that was to finally emerge.
The size, scale and scope of the book started increasing on a
regular basis. When you write about larger than life
perfectionists, your plans take on the same characteristics.
Diana invited a highly eclectic group of writers, associates
and performers to contribute short essays, each one
highlighting different aspects of Siegfried & Roy and their
legacy. She decided that the lifework of these two great artists
was best reflected in a prism of contemporary voices to
accompany the reader through the book.
Siegfried & Roy spent hundreds of hours recording
interviews that became the core of the book. Each step of the
journey they encouraged Diana and Robert to create a book
that was not just full of flattery, but really went to the heart
and soul of who they were. Robert and Diana continually
discovered themselves, being surprised by the depth of both

sigh of relief.
The first copy of the book was actually placed in Siegfried’s
hands en route to its official delivery. Robert and Diana
stopped to eat at a small Italian restaurant close to
the Jungle Palace where Siegfried liked to dine. In
fact, when they walked inside there was Siegfried
sitting at a table with a small group of friends
enjoying an early supper.
A copy of the book was brought in from their

Diana had an obvious motivation for
wanting to create this book, she had grown

I’m glad that the ‘Phenomenon’ show has been seen in so many
countries around the world. The production values are high, and
it provides a pretty good showcase for the mind-reading arts. In
this country, ITV spent a while developing a version of the show
that sadly never went into production. This is understandable,
given that there’s only so much airtime available and the ITV
schedules are just stuffed a-plenty with televisual gold. For
example, there’s The Zone (described as ‘shopping and

Turning the pack over, they are all face up.
There are no secret sleights. The only move needed is a Faro,
which is not hidden or disguised, and it doesn’t matter if it

The effect differs from the standard Triumph, which is a

The drawback to this routine is that it requires a set-up

worth it.

hoping to discover lost secrets will be disappointed because it is
not until page 314 that he turns his attention to the modus

content to say “thought-reading, so far as I am concerned, is
simply the perception of touch”. Worth reading for its
historical interest.
