continue to hold them in your right hand (Fig. 9). If you look
at the left hand side of the pieces you will see that there is a

with your right hand (Fig. 10). Insert your left thumb into the
gap and grip the pieces with your left thumb and fingers
(Fig. 11). Now give the pieces an anti-clockwise turn with

As soon as you open up the paper, holding all the pieces with

your right hand (Fig. 14). The paper in your right hand

Young Magician of Humberside,
Jim Steele evinced a general
interest in the proceedings.
Subsequently this became more
specific when he found that his
neighbour’s daughter, Diane
Griffin, displayed some
enthusiasm for magic and he
took her under his tutorial
wing. Jim was a hard
taskmaster and although Diane
did not win the trophy she did
continue to perform magic in
the Beverley area for a time.
In 1978 the Cleveland Magic
Circle recognised Jim Steele’s
services to magic, and his
former association with
Cleveland, by bestowing
Honorary Life Membership, only
the second occasion the award
had been made.
Understandably, he was very
proud of this honour.
In his mid-eighties Jim’s health began to falter and in 1982 he
spent some time in hospital where I visited him and discovered
he was a great hit with the nurses with his magic tricks and
witticisms. He recovered and returned home again, being well
cared for by his neighbours. He greatly appreciated visits by his
friends and was delighted when I was able to take along visiting
magicians to meet him. His membership of Hull Magicians’ Circle
lapsed but his enthusiasm for magic never faltered and he
concentrated now on smaller close-up items including a
miniature cups and balls routine with Joe Smith dialect patter.
It was a severe blow for Jim when his friend and companion
Doris Foster died at the age of 83 in 1987 and afterwards his
condition deteriorated significantly. He was admitted to Castle
Hill Hospital again in the summer of 1988 but instructed his
neighbours not to alert any of his magic friends as he did not
want any of them to see him in his present condition, and so,
very sadly, the first I knew of it was the news that he had died
on 30 July at the age of 93. He is remembered fondly by those
who knew him as one of the real ‘characters’ of magic.
