Application of Law of Thermodynamics to Open Systems

In real-world engineering systems, energy interactions frequently occur across the boundaries of devices
through work, heat, and mass. Such systems (known as control volumes or open systems) require careful
application of the first law of thermodynamics to ensure accurate performance analysis. Devices such as
nozzles, diffusers, compressors, turbines, throttling valves, mixing chambers, and heat exchangers are key
components in thermal-fluid systems and form the foundation of power plants, HVAC systems, and chemical
processes.
This assignment is designed to let you apply thermodynamic principles in realistic engineering scenarios
involving open systems. You are expected to demonstrate your understanding by solving energy balances for
various components, incorporating appropriate assumptions and data interpretation.
Assignment Task
Solve the following open-system scenarios using the first law of thermodynamics. Be sure to state assumptions
and illustrate your solution steps. Use property data where needed.
1. Apply the mass and energy balance equations to calculate exit velocity and volume flow rate when
steam enters a nozzle at 800 kPa and 400°C with 10 m/s velocity and exits at 200 kPa and 300°C, losing
25 kW. Inlet area is 800 cm².
2. Solve for the mass flow rate, exit velocity, and exit area when steam enters a nozzle at 5 MPa and 400°C
with 80 m/s velocity and exits at 2 MPa and 300°C. Heat loss is 120 kJ/s and inlet area is 50 cm².
3. Use the steady-flow energy equation to find the exit temperature of steam in an adiabatic turbine. Steam
enters at 8 MPa and 500°C, exits at 20 kPa with a flow rate of 3 kg/s, and the turbine produces 2.5 MW.
Neglect kinetic energy effects.
4. Apply the energy balance to determine the mass flow rate of air through a compressor of gas turbine
plant where air enters at 100 kPa and 25°C with negligible velocity and exits at 1 MPa and 347°C at 90
m/s. Heat is removed at 1500 kJ/min and power input is 250 kW.
5. Solve for the power input required to compress helium from 120 kPa and 310 K to 700 kPa and 430 K,
given a heat loss of 20 kJ/kg and a mass flow rate of 90 kg/min. Kinetic energy changes are negligible.
6. Illustrate the temperature change during throttling of CO2 from 5 MPa and 100°C to 100 kPa by
considering (a) ideal gas and (b) real gas behavior.
7. Steam enters the condenser of a steam power plant at 20 kPa and a quality of 95 percent with a mass
flow rate of 20,000 kg/h. It is to be cooled by water from a nearby river by circulating the water through
the tubes within the condenser. To prevent thermal pollution, the river water is not allowed to experience
a temperature rise above 10°C. If the steam is to leave the condenser as saturated liquid at 20 kPa, apply
energy conservation principles to find the mass flow rate of river water required.
8. Steam is to be condensed in the condenser of a steam power plant at a temperature of 50°C with cooling
water from a nearby lake, which enters the tubes of the condenser at 18°C at a rate of 101 kg/s and
leaves at 27°C. Use the first law to compute the condensation rate of steam in a condenser
