Embedded Systems Project Competition - February to

March 2024
This competition is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your skills in Embedded
Systems, with exciting rewards, recognition, and a chance for a 2-month paid internship for the
top performers.

Competition Details:
● Timeline: February to March 2024
● Eligibility: Open to all Electronics and Communication Engineering students
● Project Focus: You will choose a project from the list of advanced embedded system
ideas I’ve provided.
● Requirements:
○ Document: A comprehensive report including all necessary details, design,
simulation, and analysis.
○ Presentation: A clear and concise presentation of your project, explaining your
design, implementation, and results.
○ Hardware Prototype: A working physical prototype demonstrating the
functioning of your embedded system.
○ Project Titles: Your project title should adhere strictly to the ones I’ve provided
unless you receive prior approval. Small modifications to the title or project scope
are allowed.

Competition Projects:
You can select one of the following projects:

1. Autonomous Drone with Object Detection and Tracking


● Description: Design a fully autonomous drone capable of detecting and tracking moving
objects, such as people or vehicles, using computer vision and machine learning
algorithms.
● Components:
○ Drone platform (Quadcopter)
○ Microcontroller (e.g., STM32, NVIDIA Jetson Nano, or Raspberry Pi)
○ Camera module (e.g., OpenMV or Raspberry Pi Camera)
○ GPS, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit)
○ Object detection algorithms (e.g., OpenCV, TensorFlow Lite)
○ Motor controllers and ESCs
● Skills Involved: Machine learning, computer vision, robotics, real-time control, flight
control systems, sensor fusion.

2. Self-Balancing Robot with Path Following and Obstacle Avoidance


● Description: Build a self-balancing robot that can not only maintain balance but also
follow a path using computer vision or line detection while avoiding obstacles
autonomously.
● Components:
○ Microcontroller (e.g., Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi)
○ Gyroscope and accelerometer (e.g., MPU6050)
○ DC motors with encoders and motor drivers
○ Ultrasonic or LiDAR sensors for obstacle detection
○ Camera or IR sensors for path following
○ Pathfinding algorithm (e.g., PID control for balancing, line-following logic)
● Skills Involved: Robotics, control systems, sensor fusion, machine learning, pathfinding
algorithms.

3. 5G-Enabled Smart Wearable Health Monitoring System


● Description: Design a health monitoring wearable device that collects biometric data
(ECG, heart rate, temperature, oxygen levels) and transmits it in real time to a cloud
server using 5G or advanced cellular connectivity for continuous health monitoring and
alerts.
● Components:
○ Microcontroller (e.g., ESP32, STM32)
○ Health sensors (ECG, heart rate, pulse oximeter, temperature)
○ 5G or LTE module (e.g., Quectel EC25)
○ Power management system (low-power design)
○ Cloud platform (AWS IoT, Azure, or custom dashboard)
○ Mobile app for user interface
● Skills Involved: IoT, wireless communication, health monitoring, low-power design,
cloud computing, real-time data transmission.

4. Multi-Robot Swarm for Warehouse Automation


● Description: Implement a multi-robot swarm system where multiple robots
autonomously navigate a warehouse, communicate with each other, and collaboratively
perform tasks such as shelf stocking, picking, and item retrieval, optimized by a central
controller.
● Components:
○ Microcontrollers (e.g., Raspberry Pi, STM32)
○ DC motors with encoders for movement
○ Wireless communication modules (e.g., Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth)
○ LiDAR or ultrasonic sensors for navigation and collision avoidance
○ Computer vision or RFID for item identification
○ Central control system for coordination
● Skills Involved: Robotics, swarm intelligence, real-time communication, multi-agent
systems, computer vision.

5. AI-Powered Industrial Machine Fault Detection System


● Description: Develop an embedded system that uses AI algorithms to detect faults in
industrial machines by analyzing sensor data such as vibrations, temperature, or sound,
and triggers maintenance alerts or predictive maintenance schedules.
● Components:
○ Microcontroller (e.g., STM32, Raspberry Pi)
○ Vibration and temperature sensors
○ Sound sensor or microphone
○ Edge AI model for fault detection (TensorFlow Lite)
○ Cloud or local server for data analysis and reporting
○ User interface for real-time monitoring
● Skills Involved: Machine learning, predictive maintenance, sensor fusion, edge
computing, industrial IoT.

6. Augmented Reality-Based Medical Diagnostics System


● Description: Develop an embedded system that integrates Augmented Reality (AR) to
assist in medical diagnostics, such as visualizing internal organs or providing overlay
diagnostics based on real-time sensor data or medical imaging.
● Components:
○ Microcontroller (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson)
○ Camera (for capturing real-world environment)
○ AR software (e.g., Vuforia, OpenCV)
○ Sensors (e.g., ECG, pulse oximeter)
○ Display system (AR glasses or smartphone/tablet)
○ Medical database integration
● Skills Involved: Augmented reality, medical imaging, machine learning, sensor
integration.

7. Autonomous Underwater Robot for Ocean Exploration


● Description: Design an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) capable of exploring
oceanic depths, gathering environmental data such as water quality (pH, temperature,
salinity), and performing navigation tasks autonomously using sonar or acoustic
communication.
● Components:
○ Microcontroller (e.g., STM32, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone)
○ Pressure, temperature, pH, and salinity sensors
○ Acoustic communication for underwater data transmission
○ Sonar for navigation and object detection
○ Battery management system for extended operation
● Skills Involved: Robotics, underwater communication, sensor fusion, real-time data
collection.

Judging Criteria:
A panel of professionals from the field will evaluate your projects based on the following:
● Technical Complexity and Innovation: How advanced and unique is your solution?
● Design and Implementation: The quality of your hardware and software
implementation.
● Functionality: Does your prototype work as intended?
● Clarity of Presentation: How clearly you explain the concept, design, and results during
your presentation.
● Document Quality: The thoroughness and detail in your documentation, including
simulation results and analysis.

Awards and Prizes:


Overall Winners:
● 1st Place: 5000 Birr
● 2nd Place: 2500 Birr
● 3rd Place: 1250 Birr

Special Award for Women:


● Best Woman Participant (from the top 3): 2000 Birr

Certificates:
● All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation for their efforts.

Internship Opportunities:
● Based on your performance, the top students will be further screened for a 2-month
paid internship after your graduation.
How to Participate:
● Select one project from the list.
● Submit your document, presentation, and hardware prototype by the end of March.
● Prepare for a live presentation in front of a panel of judges.

Important Notes:
● All projects must comply with the titles I’ve given, and the requirements provided.
● If you want to modify the title or scope of the project, please get prior approval from
me.
