The Importance of Using Technological Devices in The Classroom
Some teachers may neglect or ban the use of mobile phones because they consider them as a
distraction for students. However, a research conducted by Harvard University shows that
students who are allowed to use the mobile phones in the classroom are more eager to learn.
Since they seem to be extremely appealing to young people, using them to do some activities
instead of just writing on the notebooks is more motivating for students.
Those who are against using mobile phones may say that working together with others can be lost
with too much dependence on cell phones. On the other hand, according to Brown (2002),
“teachers can make their lessons more attractive paying attention to their students’ interests and
necessities”. Therefore, teachers will offer activities that need interaction between each other.
Since these devices are replacing traditional tools such as dictionaries and digital cameras,
teachers can ask their students to record them doing a role-play activity. If teaching approaches
become update and transformed with the objective of satisfying students’ necessities, there are
more possibilities for students to acquire the target language.
So as to conclude, it is important to mention that the use of mobile phones in the classroom is one
of the best options to add variety to the foreign language classroom. Students can develop other
skills and learn not only a language but also how to make the best use of these devices. By being
aware of this, teachers can improve their way of teaching and develop themselves as better
professionals.
