Name:.................................. Due Date of Submission: 31.01.2025

Class Roll No.:.................... Assignment: 1

Problem 1 A system is described by the differential equation ddt3y + 6 ddt2y + 11 dy
dt
+ 10y =
8u. Where y is the output and u is the input to the system. Obtain the state space
representation of the system.

Problem 2 A system is described by the following differential equation. Represent the

system in state space.
d3 x d2 x dx
+ 3 + 4 + 4x = u1 (t) + 3u2 (t) + 4u3 (t)
dt3 dt2 dt
and outputs are
dx
y1 = 4 + 3u1
dt
d2 x
y2 = 2 + 4u2 + u3
dt

Problem 3 A system has three inputs u1 , u2 and u3 and three outputs y1 , y2 and y3 .
The input-output equations are
...
y 1 + a1 ÿ1 + a2 (y˙1 + ẏ2 ) + a3 (y1 − y3 ) = u1 (t)
ÿ2 + a4 (ẏ2 − y˙1 + 2y˙3 ) + a5 (y2 − y1 ) = u2 (t)
ẏ3 + a6 (y3 − y1 ) = u3 (t)

Find the state space model for this system.

Problem 5 Derive the state-space representation of the network shown in figure 2.

Problem 6 The mechanical system in Figure 3 consists of two point masses M1 and M2
that are acted upon by viscous damping forces (determined by viscous damping constant
B, B1 and B2 ), spring forces (specified by the spring constants K, K1 and K2 ), and
external forces f1 and f2 . The initial displacements of M1 and M2 at t0 = 0 are given by
y1 (0) and y2 (0) respectively, and their initial velocities are given by y˙1 (0) and y˙2 (0). The
arrows in Figure 3 indicate positive directions of displacement for M1 and M2 . Fin the
state space representation.

considering the node voltage v1 , v2 and v3 are state variables.

Problem 8 The Figure 5 depicts a ball suspension control system. The steel ball is
suspended in air by the electromagnetic force generated by the electromagnet. The
objective of the control system is to keep the steel ball suspended at a desired equilibrium
point by controlling the current i(t) in the magnet coil by means of the applied voltage
v(t), where t ≥ 0 denotes time. The resistance and inductance of the coil are R and
L [s(t)] = L/s(t) are positive constants and s(t) denotes the distance between the center
2
of the ball and the magnet at time t. The force produced by the magnet is K si 2(t) (t)
, where
K is a positive constant and g denotes the acceleration due to gravity. Determine the
defferential equations governing the dynamics of the system.
