Question 1

Size reduction is done to prepare coal for downstream processes and applications.

Coal is milled at a rate of 10 t/h and the power required for this operation is 67.5 kW.

Assuming that Bond’s law best describes the relationship between energy required

and change in particle size, determine the work index for the grain and thus find the

total power requirement to mill down to a distribution where 80% passes 100 μm.

Indicate all the steps in your calculations.

a) Describe what you understand by the term Waste-to-Energy (WTE).

b) Waste classification can be done in many different ways and may vary

according to who is describing it. However, we have been provided below with

a classification of waste into four main groups: (1) Domestic (Municipal Solid

Waste-MSW) Waste, (2) Medical Waste, (3) Industrial Waste, and (4)

Hazardous Waste.

Briefly describe and explain these four waste classifications giving the

composition of the waste where possible.
