any automatically operated machine that replaces human effort, though it may
not resemble human beings in appearance or perform functions in a humanlike manner.
By extension, robotics is the engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction,
and operation of robots.
In early times, robots were used for imagination and entertainment in the form of books
and plays. Today, robotic pets, lawn mowers, and vacuum cleaners are already in the
market for everyday use.

In the the automotive industry employed robots in their factories to help
factory operators. But unlike in novels and plays, the industrial robots do not
resemble a human except that they have hands and arms. They are computer- • Can you imagine without

Today, you will find robots where it is dangerous for humans to go. In real life,
robots are made up to help humans. You can find robots going near a bomb and
deactivating it. There are also robots that are sent to the edges of active
volcanoes, and those which transport toxic materials that go down to the ocean
floor.
A robot is a machine which has some ability to interact with physical objects. It is
also given electronic programs to do either a specific task or a whole range of
tasks or actions. It may also have some ability to perceive and absorb data on
physical objects, or on its local physical environment, or to process data or
respond to various stimuli. This is in contrast to a simple mechanical device, such as a gear or a hydraulic press or
any other item, which has no processing ability and which does tasks through purely mechanical processes and
motion.
As technology progresses, so too does the scope of what is considered robotics. In 2005, 90% of all robots could be
found assembling cars in automotive factories. These robots consist mainly of mechanical arms tasked with welding
or screwing on certain parts of a car. Today, we’re seeing an evolved and expanded definition of robotics that
includes the development, creation and use of bots that explore Earth’s harshest conditions, robots that assist law-
enforcement and even robots that assist in almost every facet of healthcare.
We’re really bound to see the promise of the robotics industry sooner,
rather than later, as artificial intelligence and software also continue
to progress. In the near future, thanks to advances in these
technologies, robots will continue getting smarter, more flexible and
more energy efficient. They’ll also continue to be a main focal point
in smart factories, where they’ll take on more difficult challenges and

Though relatively young, the robotics industry is filled with an admirable promise of progress that science fiction
could once only dream about. From the deepest depths of our oceans to thousands of miles in outer space, robots
will be found performing tasks that humans couldn’t dream of achieving alone.
San Antonio-based Xenex Disinfection Services LLC makes full-spectrum UV Germ-Zapping Robots to eliminate
harmful bacteria, viruses and spores that can cause healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
• Repetitive jobs that are boring, stressful or labor intensive for humans.
• With the range of machinery available, robots can adapt to a wide variety of welding processes
including arc, resistance, spot, laser, plasma, and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding. The main focus is on
creating the right welding programs and jigs into the welding application.

Companies are clearly developing their and robotics expertise with the idea that through
these technological innovations they’ll be able to cut costs,
Some of these human jobs will be of the creative type. Others will require humans to hone their superhuman
reasoning skills. In many cases humans and machines will find themselves in symbiotic relationships, helping each
other do what they do best. People and machines can and will work together in the future and they’re already doing
so today.
Now that you have learned the different applications of robots try to check your understanding with the following
activity.

Directions: Analyze the question about artificial life versus human beings.
Question: Do you agree that artificial lives may replace some essential human functions and live harmoniously with
actual human beings?
