Assignment1 (SCR, Single phase Rectifier Circuits)


1. SCRs with a rating of 1000 V and 200 A are available to be used in a string to handle
6 kV and 1 kA .Calculate the no of series and parallel units required in case derating
factor is (a) 0.1 and (b) 0.2 .

2. For a Thyristor maximum junction temperature is 125̊ C .the thermal resistances for
the thyristor –sink combination are Θ jc =0.16 and Θcs = 0.08 ̊C/W. For a heat sink
temperature of 70̊ C, compute the total average power loss in the thyristor sink
combination. In case the heat sink temperature is brought down to 60̊ C by forced
cooling, find the percentage in device rating.

3. The triggering circuit of a thyristor is shown in figure.The thyristor requires a gate
current of 10 mA, for guaranteed turn on. The value of R required for the thyristor to

SCRs get open circuited due to fault , fnd the new value of average load current
taking the output current as continuous .Sketch the waveform for the new output
voltage and indicate the conduction of various SCRs.

power factor for both parts a and b .

24. Is it possible to operate a single phase fully controlled half wave converter in the
inverting mode? Explain.
25. A single phase fully controlled bridge converter operates in the continuous conduction
mode from a 230V, 50HZ single phase supply with a firing angle α = 30°. The load
resistance and inductances are 10Ω and 50mH respectively. Find out the 3rd harmonic
load current as a percentage of the average load current.
