Geometrical Figures

Assignment 1(C.W)

To be written in the notebook

I. Draw a circle with a bangle.

Circle:

It is a round shaped figure that has no corners or edges.

It is also a plane figure in which all the points are at a same distance from the centre.
The fixed point is called the Centre of the circle.

Radius:

radius = line segment PM or PM

A line segment joining the centre of the circle to any point on the circle is called a radius
of the circle.
In this diagram, P is the centre of the circle while M is a point on the circle. PM is a
radius of the circle. A circle has many radii (plural of radius).
They are all of the same length.

Chord:

Chord = line segment MN

1
A line segment joining any two points on a circle is called a chord.

In the diagram, M and N are two points on the circle. Line MN is a chord of the circle

Diameter:

Diameter = line segment AB or AB

A chord passing through the centre of the circle is called a diameter.

In the diagram, chord AB passes through the centre P.

Therefore, chord AB is also a diameter of the circle. A circle has many chords and
diameters.

Circumference:

The distance around the boundary of a circle is called the circumference.

II) Construct a circle of radius 5 cm. Show radius, diameter and chord on the
circle and write the elements of the circle.

2
Elements of a circle:

a) . O is the centre of the circle.

b) OP is the radius of 5 cm
c) MN is the diameter of 10 cm
d) XY is the chord

III) Relationship between radius and diameter:

Diameter = 2 X radius
Radius = diameter ÷ 2

Note:

* Circle is drawn with the radius measurement.

* Diameter is double the radius.
* Radius is half of diameter.

IV) If the radius of the circle is 5 cm, what will be its diameter?

radius = 5cm

diameter = 2 X radius

=2X5

= 10 cm

Assignment 2 (H.W)

VI) If the diameter of the circle is 6 cm, what will be its radius?

VII) Construct a circle of radius 3 cm. Show radius, diameter and chord on the
circle and write the elements of the circle.
