Problem Paper #2
Inequalities
In Exercises 1 – 9, find the solution sets and depict these on a number line.
x+2 5 x 3 5x 1
1. 2 x - 3 > 5 x + 4 2. ³ 3. - > -
3 6 3 4 6 3
5 - 3x
4. - 1 < 3 x - 4 £ 7 5. - 3 £ <6 6. x 2 - 2 x - 3 < 0
2
7. x 2 + x > 12 8. x( x - 1) > 2 9. 3x 2 ³ 4(1 - x)
10. |𝑥| < √2 10. |𝑥 − 2| ≤ 1 11. |3𝑥 − 2| < 5
12. |3 − 8𝑥| ≤ 5
13. The cost of manufacturing x microcomputers of a certain kind each week is given by
C = 2000 + 50 x , and the revenue from selling these is given by R = 75x. How many
microcomputers must be produced and sold in order to realize a profit?
14. A hardware kiosk in a shopping mall sells a dozen washers for $2.95. Beyond the
fixed costs of $150 per hour, it costs $1.45 for enough material and labour to produce a
dozen washers. If the hourly profit varies between $50 and $200, between what levels (in
dozens) do the hourly sales vary?
15. One day, the lowest temperature in Buenos Aires was 50℉, and the highest was
77℉.
(a) In which country is Buenos Aires to be found?
(b) What is the corresponding temperature variation in degrees Celsius? (If F denotes
!
degree Fahrenheit and C denotes degrees Celsius, then 𝐹 = " 𝐶 + 32. )
15. Using a mobile phone costs $3000 per month, and an additional $1.89 per minute.
(a) What is the cost for one month if the phone is used for a total of t minutes?
(b) What are the smallest and largest numbers of hours you can use the phone in a month
if the phone bill is to be between $3,200 and $4,700?
In Exercises 15 – 17, sketch the graph of the solution of the system of inequalities.
15. 16.
x + y £1 2x + y ³ 2
- x + y £1 x£2
y³0 y £1
17.
x+ y<5
x>2
y³0
18. A furniture company can sell all the tables and chairs it produces. Each table requires
1 hour in the assembly centre and 1 13 hours in the finishing centre. Each chair requires
1 12 hours in the assembly centre and 1 12 hours in the finishing centre. The company’s
assembly centre is available 12 hours per day, and its finishing centre is available 15
hours per day. If x is the number of tables produced per day and y is the number of chairs,
find a system of inequalities describing all levels of production. Sketch the graph of the
system.
19. A person plans to invest a total of at most $20,000 in two different interest-bearing
accounts. Each account is to contain at least $5,000. Moreover, one account should have
at least twice the amount that is in the other account. Find a system of inequalities to
describe the various amounts that can be deposited in each account, and sketch the graph
of the system.
