|𝐶𝐸| = |𝐴𝐸|. Calculate:
(i) ∠𝐵𝐷𝐸
(ii) ∠𝐵𝑊𝐸
4. a) Working alone, Esi could do a piece of work in 20 hours less time than Araba
alone would take for the same work. Working together, Esi and Araba could do it
3
in 18 4 hours. If each worked at the same rate as when working separately, how
long would Esi take to do it separately?
b) The probabilities of Poku and Fremah gaining admission into the university are
2 3
respectively 5 and 8. Find the probability that only one of them will gain admission.

5. Two points P and Q on opposite sides of a vertical pole are on the same level ground as the
foot of the pole. The angles of elevation of the top of the pole from P and Q are 300 and 480
respectively. If the distance between P and Q is 50m,
a) draw a diagram to illustrate the information
b) find, correct to three significant figures, the height of the pole.
SECTION B
[60 marks]
Answer five questions only from this section. All questions carry equal marks.

6. a) Solve the simultaneous equations: 23𝑥 = 82𝑦+1 and 92𝑦 = 33𝑥−9

b) AB is a tangent to a circle PQR at the point Q. APR is a straight line such that
∠RAQ = 360 and ∠RQB = 680.
(i) Illustrate the information in a diagram.
(ii) Find the values of:
(𝛼) ∠QPA
(𝛽) ∠PRQ
7. a) In a certain school, a set of students were selected to form the “NSMQ” team according to
their abilities in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Out of the total number of students
selected, 70% were good in Mathematics, 30% were good in Physics and 56% were good
in Chemistry. All those who were good in Physics were also good Mathematics and 12%
of them were good in all the three subjects.
(i) Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate this information.
(ii) What percentage of the students who were good in:
(𝛾) exactly two of the subjects?
(𝛽) at most two of the subjects?
1
b) Given that 𝑦 = (4𝑥 + 1 )(4𝑚𝑥 + 𝑚)−2 , express m in terms of y and x.
8. A car moved from Akrokerri to Obuasi by first traveling 22.6 km on a bearing of
0340 , then 10.5km on a bearing of 0900 and finally 5.8 km on a bearing of 0600 .
a) Draw a diagram to illustrate the movement of the car.
b) Find the shortest distance between Akrokerri and Obuasi.
c) What is the bearing of Akrokerri from Obuasi?

x −2 −1 0 1 2 3 4 5
y −14 −2 1 −7
b) Using a scale of 2cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2cm to 2 units on the y-axis, draw
the graph of 𝑦 = −2 + 4𝑥 − 𝑥 2 in the interval −2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5.
