What Are Integers?

Integers are all positive and negative whole numbers, including zero.

Examples:

 Positive integers: 1, 2, 3, ...

 Negative integers: -1, -2, -3, ...

 Zero: 0

📘 Rules for Adding Integers

1. Same Signs → Add the numbers, keep the same sign.

o Example:
5+3=85 + 3 = 85+3=8
−4+(−2)=−6-4 + (-2) = -6−4+(−2)=−6

2. Different Signs → Subtract the smaller number from the larger, and keep the sign of the larger
absolute value.

o Example:
7+(−3)=47 + (-3) = 47+(−3)=4
−6+2=−4-6 + 2 = -4−6+2=−4

3. Adding Zero → The number stays the same.

o Example:
−5+0=−5-5 + 0 = -5−5+0=−5
0+9=90 + 9 = 90+9=9

1. 6+36 + 36+3

 Both positive → Add normally

Answer: 6+3=96 + 3 = 96+3=9

2. −4+(−5)-4 + (-5)−4+(−5)

 Both negative → Add and keep the negative sign

Answer: −4+(−5)=−9-4 + (-5) = -9−4+(−5)=−9

3. −7+2-7 + 2−7+2

 Different signs → Subtract: 7−2=57 - 2 = 57−2=5, keep the sign of the bigger number (7 is
negative)
Answer: −7+2=−5-7 + 2 = -5−7+2=−5
4. 9+(−3)9 + (-3)9+(−3)

 Different signs → Subtract: 9−3=69 - 3 = 69−3=6, 9 is positive → final sign is positive

Answer: 9+(−3)=69 + (-3) = 69+(−3)=6

5. −10+10-10 + 10−10+10

 Same number, different signs → Always equals 0

Answer: −10+10=0-10 + 10 = 0−10+10=0

6. 0+(−8)0 + (-8)0+(−8)

 Adding 0 does not change the number

Answer: 0+(−8)=−80 + (-8) = -80+(−8)=−8

7. −12+5-12 + 5−12+5

 Different signs → Subtract: 12−5=712 - 5 = 712−5=7, 12 is negative → answer is negative

Answer: −12+5=−7-12 + 5 = -7−12+5=−7

8. 15+(−20)15 + (-20)15+(−20)

 Different signs → Subtract: 20−15=520 - 15 = 520−15=5, 20 is negative → answer is negative

Answer: 15+(−20)=−515 + (-20) = -515+(−20)=−5

9. −1+(−9)-1 + (-9)−1+(−9)

 Both negative → Add and keep the negative sign

Answer: −1+(−9)=−10-1 + (-9) = -10−1+(−9)=−10

10. 11+(−11)11 + (-11)11+(−11)

 Same numbers, opposite signs → Always equals 0

Answer: 11+(−11)=011 + (-11) = 011+(−11)=0
