Community engagement means including people from the community in

important things that affect their lives.

It helps the government, schools, companies, and others to listen to the people
and understand their needs. This is also called civic engagement.
When people give their ideas, it helps in making better decisions. Even if not
everyone agrees, leaders still get to know what the people think.
It has two parts:
1. Process – How we ask people to share their ideas.
2. Result – What we get, like stronger communities or parents helping in
schools.
In planning, we use it to get ideas. In community work, we use it to both plan and
get results.
Community A community is a group of people who are connected in some way.
This can be:
By place – like people from the same country, city, or neighborhood.
Or by interest – like people who have the same culture, religion, values, or needs.
A community can include citizens, families, businesses, and anyone else who is
involved.
Engagement Engagement means involving people (called stakeholders) in plans or
activities. It also means talking to them and allowing them to share their ideas so
they can help in a good way.
Community
Stakeholders (people or groups) with common geography (place) or interests (like
values, culture, or needs).
Engagement
Including stakeholders in {processes} activities or decision-making and supporting
meaningful contribution (sharing useful ideas and help)
Horizontal Community Engagement (‫)افقی کمیونٹی انگیجمنٹ‬
This type of engagement happens between people or groups at the same level.
For example, neighbors, local businesses, schools, or community groups working
together, sharing ideas, and helping each other.
It’s like teamwork among equals.
Vertical Community Engagement (‫)عمودی کمیونٹی انگیجمنٹ‬
This means communication and working together between different levels – like
the community and the government, or small local groups and big organizations.
The goal is to connect the higher level (like government) with the lower level
(like local people) so they understand each other and make better decisions
together.
Vertical Community Engagement
This type of engagement involves communication and collaboration between
different levels of authority or organization. It typically includes:
Top-Down Initiatives (‫)اوپر سے نیچے کی پالیسیاں‬
Programs or policies ( rules ) started by higher authorities (like the government or
big organizations) to involve local communities in carrying out or following them.
( that engage with local communities to implement or enforce)
2. Bottom-Up Advocacy ( ‫) نیچ ساوپرکیحمایت‬
Efforts by local communities or small groups to influence higher authorities (like
government bodies or big institutions) to make decisions that benefit them. This
means local people or small groups working together to influence bigger
organizations or the government to make decisions that help them.
Example:
Imagine a group of neighbors noticing that their street lights are broken. They
come together, write a letter, and ask the local government to fix them. This is
bottom-up advocacy because the idea and action started from the community,
not from the top.
3. Hierarchical Collaboration (‫)درجہ بندی کے مطابق تعاون‬
Cooperation between different levels of an organization or society to ensure that
everyone's needs and perspectives are considered.
4. Resource Allocation (‫)وسائل کی تقسیم‬
Distribution of resources, support, and information from higher levels to lower
levels to help in community development and engagement.
Community engagement means people working together to make their area
better for everyone. When people help each other, they can solve problems like
education, health, cleanliness, and jobs. It makes the community strong and
balanced, not just for now, but also for the future.
Importance of Community Engagement
People are truly engaged when they can share their ideas, join discussions, help
make decisions, and take part in projects that affect their lives. That’s why
government and organization leaders should not only make decisions themselves.
They should also help people, work together with them, support them, and give
them the power to be part of the process.

1. Strengthening Social Connections (‫)معاشرتی رابطوں میں اضافہ‬:

Community engagement helps people connect and feel they belong. It brings
people together, encourages them to talk and share, and creates opportunities to
build friendships and support each other. These connections make the community
stronger and more united.

2. Addressing Local Issues and Needs (‫)مقامی مسائل اور ضروریات کا حل‬
Community engagement helps identify and solve local problems. When people
are involved in decisions, their concerns are heard, and solutions fit their specific
needs.
3. Empowering Individuals and Communities
Community engagement gives people a chance to shape their neighborhoods. It
encourages them to take part in improving their areas, leading to stronger and
more active communities.
4. Enhancing Community Health and Well-Being
When people work together, they build social connections and share resources.
This cooperation leads to better physical and mental health for everyone in the
community.
5. Encouraging Civic Participation & Democracy
Community engagement is essential for a healthy democracy. It encourages
people to participate in civic activities, understand democratic values, and take
responsibility for their community's future.
6. Economic Development
When people in a community take part in activities and work together, it helps the
area grow economically. It supports small businesses, attracts investment, and
creates jobs. This helps the economy of the community get better.
7. Enhancing Trust and Social Cohesion
When people take part in community activities, they start trusting each other
more. They feel included and respected. This creates unity in the community,
reduces crime, and makes people feel safe and happy.
8. Generating Innovative Solutions
When different people from the community come together, they share their ideas,
skills, and experiences. This mix of ideas helps in thinking of new and smart ways
to solve problems.
9. Working Together for a Strong Future
When people in a community work together, they become stronger. They help
each other during hard times. When everyone shares in decision-making, they feel
responsible and ready to face future problems.
10. Improve Knowledge: When people take part in community talks, they learn
more about the issue. They understand different points of view. They also improve
their speaking, thinking, and decision-making skills.
