MC450 – Control systems

Assignment one

Due date: 28 June 2024

Instructions:

1. This assignment has eight (8) questions with marks as allocated in the paper.
2. Attempt all questions.
3. The assignment should be done in groups of at most four students.
4. Present readable and tidy work.
5. Ensure your Name, SIN, Programme, Course code and date are indicated on your
script.
6. Submission of scripts should be done by 28 June 2024, 17:00 by respective class
representatives.
1. Consider a home heating system consisting of a natural gas-fired furnace and a
thermostat. In this case, the process consists of the interior space to be heated. The
thermostat contains both a temperature sensor and the controller. The furnace is either
on (heating) or off. Draw a schematic diagram for this control system. On your diagram,
identify the controlled variables and manipulated variables. Be sure to include several
possible sources of disturbances that can affect room temperature. [6 Marks]

2. Figure 2 below shows a stirred tank heating process with a constant holdup volume.
Assume mass flow rate of the inlet pipe is constant whereas its temperature fluctuates
but the product must be within set temperature tolerances. Identify the controlled
variable, manipulated variable and disturbance variables. Show on the schematics two of
the kinds of control strategies that can be employed. Determine a state-space
representation for the system assuming the goal is to have the fluid at a certain desired
temperature. Furthermore, develop a programme that depicts the evolution of the
output given a range of step input values. [6 Marks]

3. Find the transfer function, 𝐺(𝑠) = 𝑉𝑜 (𝑠)/𝑉𝑖 (𝑠) for the network shown in Figure 3. Identify
the controlled and manipulated variables. Additionally, draw a block diagram for the
system. Furthermore, develop a MATLAB programme that depicts the evolution of
output voltage in response to varying step, ramp, parabolic and sinusoidal input signals.

4. Find the transfer function, 𝐺(𝑠) = 𝑉𝑜 (𝑠)/𝑉𝑖 (𝑠) and state-space representation for the
circuit shown in Figure 4. Simulate the circuit in Proteus and Simulink. [15 Marks]

5. Find the transfer function, G(s) = X3 (s)/F (s) for the system shown in Figure 5. Further,
determine the control goal and briefly explain where such a system could be used.
Develop a MATLAB programme that depicts the evolution of the output when the system
is exposed to varying step, ramp, parabolic and sinusoidal input forces.

6. Find the transfer function, G(s) = X (s)/𝐸a (s) for the system shown in Figure 6.
Determine the controlled and manipulated variables. [15 Marks]

7. Find the transfer function, G(s) = θL (s)/𝐸a (s) for the system shown in Figure 7.
Determine the controlled and manipulated variables. Develop a MATLAB programme
that depicts the evolution of the output angular speed to varying step, ramp, parabolic
and sinusoidal input voltages. [15 Marks]

8. Given a cylindrical tank, with cross-section area A and height H. Develop a fluid level
control model for a setup which has a single inlet pipe whose volumetric in flow rate is 𝑞𝑖
and out volumetric flow rate is 𝑞𝑜 . Assume the fluid has a constant density, 𝜌. Further
provide a transfer function H(s)/Qi(s) for the system, assuming an equilibrium level of ℎ̅.
Furthermore, devise a state-space representation for the system.
