1. In a shell and tube heat exchanger of parallel flow type, the lubricating oil at 190 0 C is
to be cooled to 750 C by water entering at 270 C and leaving at 650 C. Find the
effectiveness and the NTU. Also find the lowest temperature to which the lubricating
oil can be cooled if the inlet conditional and mass flow rates of both the fluids remain
PE
unchanged by varying the length of the heat exchanger. [15]

2. A cross flow exchanger with cold fluid unmixed is used to cool air from 1000 C by
using air at 200 C. The hot air flows at a rate of 3000 kg/hr while the cold air rate is
R
7000 kg/hr. The hot air leaves the exchanger at 550 C. Assuming the overall heat
transfer coefficient to be 70 W/m2 C, calculate the exit temperature of the cold fluid and
S
the area of the heat exchanger. [15]

3. Oil is to be heated in a double pipe heat exchanger from 32.20 C to 37.80 C. The oil flow
JU
rate is 0.0504 kg/s. Water at 65.60 C is available at 0.63 kg/s. The heat exchanger is
made of 2 × 1¼ std type M copper tubing that is 4.57 m long. Analyze the proposed
setup completely. Use the effectiveness-NTU method, and place the oil in the annulus.
Oil properties at 350 C are ρ=878 kg/m³, Cp = 1943 j/kg K, v=0.000397 m²/s,
LY
∝= 8.44 × 10ˉ8 m²/s. [15]

4. A steam turbine has a condenser flow (of steam) at a full load of 12200 kg/hr. The
quality of steam at turbine exhaust is 0.86. The condenser pressure is 0.08 bar. Sea

water used for circulation is at 2.20 C. The terminal temperature difference between the
steam and outgoing water is 580 C. The circulating water velocity is maintained at
1.7 m/s. The condenser tubes are of 14 mm ID and 1.24 mm thickness. Determine the
U
rate of flow of cooling water the length of tubes the number of tubes in condenser, Take
U0 = 3260 W/m2k. [15]

5.a) Derive the equation for heat transfer coefficient for a vertical condenser.

b) What is the role of sub cooler and explain it in both horizontal and vertical condensers?

6. Quiescent refrigerant 134a vapor at a saturation temperature of 470 C condenses on a
horizontal smooth copper tube whose outside wall temperature is maintained constant
at 400 C. The outside tube diameter is 19 mm. Calculate the average condensation heat
transfer coefficient on the tube. The properties of R 134 at 470 C are pl = 1117.3 kg/m3;
1
density = 62.5 kg/m3; kl=0.068 W/mK; μl = 1.72 × 10-4 Ns/m2; hfg = 154.6 kj/kg. [15]

from 80 to 110 0F. Available for the service is a 19 ¼ inch ID, 1-2 exchanger having
200 tubes ¼ inch OD, 16 BWG, 16 ft. long on 1.0 inch square pitch. Baffles are spaced
SE
6 inch apart, and the bundles are arranged for four passes. What arrangement gives the
more nearly balanced pressure drops and what is the dirt factor? What is optimum
outlet water temperature? The viscosity of distillate is 3.1. Centipoise at 100 0F and
1.3 centipoise at 210 0F. [15]
D
8.a) Explain Makeup water calculations for cooling towers.
b) A cooling tower has a duty of 44MW in which the outlet and inlet water temperatures
PA
are 330 C and 230 C respectively. The available ambient conditions are 200 C and
55% RH. Carry out the complete design of cooling tower with suitable assumption
make suitable comments on the results. [8+7]
