QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

a. Define the following terms as used in networking. (4 marks)


i. Multiplexing
ii. Modulation
iii. Demodulation
iv. Attenuation
b. Explain three benefits that ABC company can gain by hailing a local area network.
(6 marks)
c. Mary created a mesh topology with 5 computers, calculate the total number of points to point
connection in the topology. (4 marks)
d. Discuss three differences between personal area network and local area network.
(6 marks)
e. With the aid of diagram differential between thicknet and thinnet coaxial cables.
(6 marks)
f. Outline four benefits of star topology. (4 marks)

SECTION B – ANSWER ANY TWO QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

a) The diagram below shows four computer named H1, H2, H3 and H4 connected using a
switch. Each device has a hypothetical MAC address associated with it for instance the MAC
address for H1 is AA-AA. Each device is connected to a switch port using the Ethernet cable
with labels indicated in the diagram as FA/01, FA/02, FA/03, and FA/04 for computers H1,
H2, H3, and H4 respectively. Study the diagram and answer the questions that follow.

i. Explain how the switch will create a MAC address table and populate the MAC address
table. (8 marks)
ii. Assume a new device h5 is introduced with a hypothetical MAC address EE-EE what
would happen if H2 sends message to H5 and H5 never replies. (4 marks)
b) Discuss three models of transmission on computer network. (6 marks)
c) Differentiate between a firewall and gateway. (2 marks)

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)

a. Highlight the functions of each layer of the TCP/IP model. (8 marks)


b. Discuss how carrier sense multiple access collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) works.
(6 marks)
c. Michuki Technical Training Institute is located about 30 km from Murang’a University of
technology. Assuming that the two institutions want to connect through a physical media, as
an expert advice on the three factors they should consider when selecting the media.
(6 marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)

a. Discuss four principles that were considered while developing the OSI model. (8 marks)
b. Peter wants to set up a wireless network (WIFI) in a small office to enable the office
occupants to access the internet using mobile device. Explain four protocols that peter would
need for the network to work. (8 marks)
c. Compare and contrast synchronous and asynchronous model of data transmission.
(4 marks)
