FINAL Dec. 12, 2023 2:00 pm -5:00pm, H 557 5

PROFESSOR LAB INSTRUCTOR

Dr. John Xiupu Zhang, Donald Davis

Total Marks: 140

MATERIALS ALLOWED o NO

X
CALCULATORS ALLOWED o NO o YES

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

This is a closed-book exam. Attempt all questions.

Only an official calculator with the ENCS sticker is allowed.

If you have any difficulty, you may try to make REASONABLE assumptions. State the assumptions and how
those assumptions limit your answers. Show all your works in detail and justify your answers.

Marks are given for how an answer is arrived at, not just the answer itself.

1. (20 marks) A 200 V DC shunt motor has an equivalent circuit as shown in Fig. 1 with Ra=0.5
ohm, Rf =100 ohm. At 30% load, the motor has a speed of 1000 r/min and an output power of
500 W. For the full load, the motor output power is 2400 W at the speed of 2000 r/min. When
the motor is fully loaded, find
a) The back emf Eb or Vb of the rotor (10 marks)
b) The torque of the shaft (5 marks)
c) The line current of the motor (5 marks)

2. (20 marks) A magnetic circuit is shown in Fig. 2, in which the left and right branch have an
air gap with a height of 5 cm. The steel frame material has
µr = ∞ . N=100 and the current I = 5 A. Find

a) The total reluctance and equivalent circuit

b) The flux density B across the air gap

V (rms) at 60 Hz drives a load via two stages of

ideal transformers as shown in Fig. 4. The load
impedance is Z= L 500∠ − 250 Ω . The two stages
of transformers are with the coils of n1 : n2 = 1: 4
and n3 : n4 = 2 : 4 . Find

a) The equivalent impedance (10 marks)
