Tutorial 3

The document outlines a tutorial on basic structural steel design, focusing on the calculation of effective net areas for tension members and angle sections connected by bolts. It includes specific tasks such as determining effective net areas for different bolting methods and designing a double cover plate butt joint with specified dimensions and material properties. The tutorial emphasizes practical applications of steel design principles using grade Fe 410 steel and grade 4.6 bolts.

CE3050: Basic Structural Steel Design

Tutorial-3
1. A 300 ISF 8 mm of grade Fe 410 is used as a tension member in a lattice
girder. It is connected to a 12 mm thick gusset plate by 18 mm diameter bolts of
grade 4.6. Calculate the effective net area of the member, if

(a) chain bolting is done as shown in Fig. 1(a)

(b) zig-zag bolting is done as shown in Fig. 1(b)

2. Determine the effective net area for the angle sections shown in Fig. 2. The angles are connected with 18 mm
diameter bolts of grade 4.6. The steel is of grade Fe 410.
3. Design a double cover plate butt joint using M24 bolts of product grade C and
property class 5.6 to connect two flats of size 350mm × 16mm for maximum
efficiency. Assume that one shear plane intercepts the threads of the bolts. The yield
and ultimate tensile strengths of the flats are 250MPa and 410MPa, respectively
