Condesor Class Notes

The document classifies condensers into three main types: jet condensers, surface condensers, and evaporative condensers, each with specific subtypes and operational details. Jet condensers include low level counter flow, low level parallel flow, and high level types, while surface condensers feature double pass, down flow, and central flow designs. Evaporative condensers are noted for their efficiency in water usage and are suitable for small power plants, utilizing gilled tubes for steam condensation.

Classification of condensers

A) Jet condenser
• low level counter flow jet condenser
• Low level parallel flow jet condenser
• High level jet condenser

B) Surface condenser
• Double pass surface condenser
• Down flow surface condenser
• Central flow condenser

C) Evaporative condenser
Low level counter flow jet condenser

i. Exhaust steam is supplied from the bottom side of the condenser and it
flows upward while the cooling water is supplied from the top of the
condenser.
ii. The water flows in downward direction through a series of a perforated
trays. The steam get condensed while its come in contact with the falling
water.
iii. The air extraction pump is situated at the top of condenser which draws
the air and any uncondensed vapour.
iv. The capacity of air pump required is small since it is required to extract
cooled air and water vapour. These condensers can be installed directly
below the steam turbine.

Low level parallel jet condenser
High level jet condenser

• This is also called as barometric jet condenser.

• A long tail pipe more than 10.33 m in length is attached to the bottom of
the condenser.
• This allows the condensate and the coolant to be discharged from the
condenser under the gravity action, hence a condensate extraction pump is
not needed for such condensers.
• The working and other details are similar to low level counter flow jet
condenser.

Double pass surface condenser

• It consist of cast iron cylindrical shell which is made airtight and it is

closed at each end .
• A water circulating pump is used to circulate the cooling water into the
condenser. This water enters at one end of the lower half of the tubes, flows
to the other end and again it returns through the upper half of the tubes .
• The exhaust steam enters at top of the condenser and while it flows down
over the tubes , the steam gets condensed.
• The condensate with air extract with the help of wet air pump from the
bottom side of the condenser.
Double pass surface condenser
Evaporative condenser

• The advantage of such condenser is that it needs very small amount of

circulating water and the makeup water since the coolant is used again and
again.
• These condensers are only suitable for small power plants.
• In this, the exhaust steam is passed through a series of gilled tubes called
condenser coils while a thin film of cooling water trickles over these tubes
continuously from water nozzles.
• During the condensation of steam, this thin film of water is evaporated and
the remainder of water is collected in the water tank.
• The condensate is extracted with the help of wet air pump.
