Tutorial 9

The document outlines a tutorial with multiple problems related to the design and analysis of steel columns under various loading conditions. It includes calculations for axial load capacity, adequacy checks for fabricated columns, and design requirements for built-up columns with different lacing systems. The tutorial emphasizes practical applications of structural engineering principles for columns of varying lengths and configurations.

1. An ISHB [email protected] N/m is to be used as a column 3.5m long with both ends
restrained against rotation and translation. Determine the design axial load on
the column section.
2. Calculate the design axial load carrying capacity of a built-up column consisting
of [email protected]/m with cover plate of 320 × 20mm on each flange. The
length of column is 4m and assume that its one end is fixed and other end is
hinged.
3. A fabricated column, 5m long with both ends fixed, is made of 250 × 30 𝑚𝑚
plates as flanges and 350 × 20𝑚𝑚 plate as web of an I-section. Check the
adequacy of the section if factored load on column is 275 tonnes.
4. Design a built-up column 9m long to carry a factored load of 1200kN. The
column is fixed at both the ends. The column consists of two channels placed
back to back.
A) Provide batten system.
B) Provide single lacing system
C) Provide double lacing system
5. Design a built-up column 10 m long (effective length) to carry a factored load of
1500kN. The column consists of two channels placed toe to toe.
D) Provide batten system.
E) Provide single lacing system
F) Provide double lacing system
