AERO 201 Engineering Dynamics

(Cross listed with CIVE 201; MEEN 201)

(3 Lectures – 3 Credits)

Prerequisite: AERO 200


Co-requisites: MATH 204, MATH 206

Course Catalog Description:


This course introduces rectilinear and curvilinear motion of particles and rigid bodies,
kinematics and kinetics of particles and rigid bodies, rotational and translational motion of rigid
bodies, principle of work and energy, and principle of impulse and momentum in particles and
rigid body dynamics.

1. Kinematics of particles (5 lectures)
2. Relative/dependent motion of particles (2 lectures)
3. Kinetics of particles: force and acceleration (3 lectures)
4. Kinetics of particles: work and energy (3 lectures)
5. Kinetics of particles: impulse and momentum (5 lectures)
6. Kinetics of systems of particles (5 lectures)
7. Kinematics of rigid bodies (6 lectures)
8. Planar and 3D kinetics of rigid bodies: force and acceleration (6 lectures)
9. Planar and 3D kinetics of rigid bodies: work and energy (5 lectures)
10. Planar and 3D kinetics of rigid bodies: impulse and momentum (5 lectures)

Structure and teaching methodologies:


Lectures will either be 3 x 50 minutes or 2 x 75 minutes per week. The course is delivered in
form of classroom lectures with strong emphasis on solving practical analysis problems.
Individual assignments and quizzes are held throughout the semester to reinforce knowledge
of the course material taught in class.

Assessment:
All course learning outcomes are assessed using the following assessment tools.
Coursework (Quizzes, homework) 25%
Semester Examination(s) 35%
Final Examination 40%

Outcomes
1 Apply kinematics techniques to analyze the velocity and acceleration of a 1
particle and systems of particles.
2 Apply Newton’s second law of motion and law of gravitation to construct 1
simple math models of accelerating bodies.
3 Apply the concepts of dynamic equilibrium and d’Alembert’s Principle. 1
4 Solve kinetic problems using the concepts of mechanical work, kinetic and 1
potential energy, power and efficiency, conservative forces and systems,
conservation of energy, and the principle of work and energy.
5 Apply the concepts of linear and angular impulse and momentum and the 1
principle of impulse and momentum to solve various problems in dynamics.
