Complete Reactivity Series - Work Sheet 1

The document is a worksheet for Grade 7 chemistry students on the reactivity series, detailing the arrangement of elements by reactivity and including exercises to complete the series. It explains concepts such as the replacement of metals in salts, electrolysis, corrosion, and methods to prevent rusting of iron. Additionally, it highlights the properties of metals like silver, gold, and platinum in relation to their reactivity and corrosion resistance.

MERRYLAND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Department of chemistry / Grade 7

Topic : Reactivity series – work sheet 1

I. It is a series of elements in which elements are arranged in the decreasing order of their
reactivity.
A) The elements which are in the top of the reactivity series are ……most reactive……

B) The elements which are down in the reactivity series are ……………least reactive……………

C) Complete the reactivity series by filling the blanks. (Use the reactivity series mnemonic)

Potassium

Sodium

Lithium

Calcium

Magnesium

Aluminum

Carbon

Zinc

Iron

Tin

Lead

Hydrogen

Copper

Silver

Gold

Platinum
II.

III.

Iron

Copper

Zinc Calcium Sulfate

Sodium Chloride Magnesium

Copper Magnesium Nitrate

IV.

It is the process where a more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal in a salt.

Electrolysis is the process in which ionic compounds are decomposed into simpler substances when
electricity is passed through.

A naturally forming rock where metals can extracted.

It is the removal of oxygen and gain of electrons.

V.

iron

copper

These metals because they are less reactive than carbon, so carbon displace them easily.

2.

lithium iron
a)

Potassium sulfate
b) copper
3. The metals like silver, gold and platinum are found in the native form. Why?

They are found in their native form because they are very non-reactive so they do not react with

there surroundings.

4. All metals except Au, Ag and pt are found on earth in the form of …………oxides……….

5. Define the term corrosion

Corrosion is the process by which metals get converted to compounds (mainly oxides) when they

are kept exposed to air and moisture.

6. Corrosion of iron is called ………rusting………

7. Name the three metals which are resistant to corrosion

……Magnesium, Zinc and Aluminum………………….

8. Even though silver is resistant to corrosion it blackens if the atmosphere contains

……………oxygen……………………

9. Down the reactivity series tendency to get corroded……decreases………..

10. Rusting of iron can be prevented by ……painting, galvanizing and electolysis……..

11. Less reactive iron corrode faster than aluminium. Why?

When aluminium is exposed to air it forms a uniform coating oxide on its surface. This coating is not
porous and is not flakey. This aluminium oxide prevents further contact of metal with air and prevents
corrosion.

12. Rusting of iron can be prevented by Painting, galvanizing, sacrificial protection.
