Tutorial 3.13
Tutorial 3.13
1. Water flows in a pipe system as shown. Calculate the average velocity of the water in pipe C, if
𝑄𝐴 = 0.2 𝑚3 /𝑠 and 𝑉𝐵 = 5𝑚/𝑠.
2. For the frictionless syphon shown, determine the discharge and the pressure heads A and B given
that the pipe diameter is 200 mm and the nozzle exit diameter is 150 mm.
3. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the pipe bend shown below, if the
diameter is 600 mm, the discharge is 0.3 m³/s and the upstream pressure head is 30m.
4. Water flows into an open tank at a rate of 0.15 m³/s and flows out through a 250 mm diameter
pipe at a velocity of 3.5 m/s. If the area of the water surface is 20 m², determine the rate at which
0.0011𝑚
the water level will rise or fall. (𝑉𝐶 = − 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑠 𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔)
𝑠
5. Water is pumped from a well 2.5 m lower than the pump to a nozzle which is 17.5 m higher than
the pump and is discharged vertically upwards. The pipes have a dimeter of 100 mm and the nozzle
1
diameter is 25 mm. The pump develops a total pressure head of 50 m, in other words the pump
adds 50 m of pressure head to the water. Ignore all losses and determine:
a. The velocity of the water when it leaves the nozzle. 𝑣2 = 24.26𝑚/𝑠
b. The height that the water will reach above the nozzle. 29.997𝑚
c. The absolute pressure at the inlet of the pump, if the atmospheric pressure is 90kPa.
64304.55𝑁/𝑚²
6. A horizontal nozzle discharges 0.01m³/s of water into the air. The supply pipe’s diameter (𝑑𝐴 40
mm) is twice as large as the nozzle diameter (𝑑𝐵 20 mm). The nozzle is held in place by a hinge
mechanism. Determine the magnitude and direction of the reaction force at the hinge, if the gauge
pressure at A is 500 000 N/m². 𝐹𝑅 = 614.094𝑁; tan−1 = 26.67°
7. A 20 mm dam pipe forks, one branch being 10 mm in diameter and the other 15 mm in diameter.
If the velocity in the 10 mm pipe is 0.3 m/s and that in the 15 mm pipe is 0.6 m/s, calculate the
1.295×10−4 𝑚3
discharge and the velocity in the 20 mm diameter pipe. (𝑄 = , 𝑉 = 𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑚𝑒 𝑚/𝑠)
𝑠
8. A 500 mm diameter siphon pipeline discharges water from a large reservoir. Taking atmospheric
pressure as 1 bar (100kPa) and neglect all losses, determine the following:
a. The maximum possible elevation of its summit for a discharge of 2.15 m³/s without the
pressure becoming less than 20 kN/m² absolute. 2.044𝑚
b. The corresponding elevation of its discharge end. (Tell me)

9. A reducing pipe bend is shown. If the discharge/Q is 500 l/s and the upstream pressure is 1000
kN/m², find the magnitude and direction of the force on the bend. 𝐹𝑟 = 174.3389𝑁; tan−1 =
8.27°
10. A pipeline of 300 mm diameter carrying water at an average velocity of 4.5m/s branches into two
pipes of 150 mm and 200 mm diameters. If the average velocity in the 150 mm pipe is 5/8 of the
velocity in the main pipeline, determine the average velocity of flow in the 200 mm pipe and the
total flow rate in the system. 𝑉2 = 8.535𝑚/𝑠
