Workers come to the tool storeroom to receive special tools (required by them) for accomplishing a
particular project assigned to them. The average time between the two arrivals is 60 seconds and the
arrivals are assumed to be Poisson distribution. The average service time (of the tool room attendant) is 40
seconds. Determine
(a) Average queue length.
(b) Average length of non-empty queues.
(c) Average number of workers in system.
(d) Mean waiting time of an arrival.
(e) Average waiting time of an arrival (worker) who actually waits.
(f) An additional storeroom will be provided, and an additional room attendant will be hired when a
customer’s waiting time in the system exceeds 5 minutes. How should the flow of arrival increase to
justify a second storeroom?
Question No. 1 (b) Marks BL CO PO PI Code

A petrol station has a single pump and space for not more than 3 cars (2waiting, 1 being served). A car
arriving when the space is filled goes elsewhere for petrol. Cars arrive according to Poisson distribution at
a mean rate of one every 8 minutes. Their service time has an exponential distribution with a mean of 4
minutes. Find (a) the probability that there is no car in the system. (b) the probability that the system is
full. (c) the overall effective arrival rate (d) Average number of cars in the system (e) Average number of
cars in the queue (f) Average waiting time of cars in the queue (g) Average waiting time of cars in the
system

A tax consulting firm has 4 service counters in its office to receive people who have problems and
complaints about their income, wealth and sales taxes. Arrivals average 80 people in an 8-hour service
day. Each tax advisor spends an irregular amount of time servicing the arrivals which have been found to
have an exponential distribution. The average service time is 20 minutes, find
(a) The average number of customers in the system.
(b) Average time a customer spends in the system.
(c) Average waiting time for a customer.
(d) The time spent by a tax advisor. (utilization factor)
(e) The probability that a customer has to wait before he gets service.
(f) The probability that an arrival enters without waiting.
(g) The probability that there is someone waiting
(h) Mean waiting time in the queue for those who wait.
(i) Average number of customers (in non-empty queues), who must actually wait.
(j) The probability that a service will take more than 30 min waiting to be served and complete the task.

Question No. 2 (b) Marks BL CO PO PI Code

5 3 4 2 2.8.1
In a city airport, flights arrive at a rate of 24 flights per day. It is known that the inter arrival time follows
an exponential distribution and the service time is also exponential with an average of 30 minutes. Find the
following: (a) The probability that the queue size exceeds 7 (b) The probability that the waiting time in the
queue exceeds 2 hrs.(c) The probability that the waiting time in system exceeds 3 hrs. (d) The mean
number of flights in the queue.
