Circles SAT CLASS - 21

The equation of circle with center(h , k )and radius ’r’ is (x – h)²+( y – k )²=r ²

1) A circle is a closed path which is equidistant from a fixed point. The fixed
point is called center of the circle. The constant distance is called radius of the
circle.

2) Area of the circle = π r 2.

3) Circumference of the circle = 2 πr .

4) A chord is a line joining of two points on the circumference of a circle or a

line joining of two points on the circle.

5) Length of the chord = 2√ r 2−d 2 .

Where ‘r’ is radius and ‘d’ is perpendicular distance from center to that chord.

6) The longest chord of a circle is the diameter of the circle. A circle is

symmetric about any diameter.

7) Length of the diameter ¿ 2 r . where ‘ r ’ is radius

8) A secant line is a line intersecting a circle in two distinct points.

9) If PAB, PCD are two secant lines then PA x PB=PC x PD

10) A line that touches the circle at only one point is a tangent to the circle.

11) A tangent is perpendicular to the line passing through the center at point
of tangency.

12) Two chords that are equal in length will be equidistant from the center.

13) Two chords which are equidistant from the centre are equal in length.

14) Every chord divides the circle into two arcs. An arc is a segment of a
circle. Longer length arc is called major arc and shorter length arc is called
minor arc.

15) Diameter divides the circle into two equal arcs each arc is called semi
circle.

16) The angle in the minor arc is obtuse. The angle in the major arc is acute.
Angle in the semi circle is right angle.

17) Angles in the same arcs are equal. Angles in the opposite arcs are
supplementary.

18) The angle made by the arc at its center is double the angle made by the
arc on the opposite arc.

19) The part of a circle is called sector.

29) Two circles have same center with different radii are called as concentric
circles. They form a ring.

30) Area of ring ¿ π ( R2−r 2 ) Where R=¿ radius of outer circle and r =¿radius of
inner circle.

31) The maximum area of triangle that can be inscribed in semi circle of
radius' r ' is r 2.

32) The maximum area of rectangle that can be inscribed in a circle of radius
‘ r ’ is 2 r 2.
