COMPOUND PENDULUM

(MOVABLE KNIFE-EDGE)

Objective: To find the acceleration due to gravity using a compound pendulum.

Description: The apparatus consist of a uniform rectangular graduated bar of iron mace
unsymmetrical by a series of big and small holes bored along its length. It has a knife-edge,
which can be clamped at any point
along the bar.

Procedure: The knife-edge is fixed against a definite division, say 2cm.,

Near one end. The pendulum is suspended from fixed support and allowed to
swing with a small amplitude without wobbling and the period of oscillation
is determined. The knife edge is fixed successively at 5, 10, 15, etc., cm
division on the pendulum and the period for each position is found. The period
will be successively diminishing. In determining the period, the number of l/T2
oscillations is increased correspondingly so as to estimate the small difference
in period more accurately. The period attains a minimum value and then begins
to increase. The number of oscillations in this case may be diminished
l/T2correspondingly. The period is determined for successive position of the knife
edge till it is slightly higher than that obtained for the first position. The knife-
edge is then fixed at the other end of the pendulum which is inverted and a
series of reading taken as before. The distances of the knife-edge are always
measured from the same end even after inverting the pendulum. The results are
recorded as shown below.

A graph is drawn taking distance on the X-axis and period of oscillation on the Y-axis.
…………………………………………………………...

A line is drawn parallel to the X-axis corresponding to a period T cutting the graph at four points
C, D, E, F. Now (CE+DF)/2 gives l, the length of the equivalent simple pendulum corresponding
to the period T.

Now T = 2π √l/g . . g = 4π 2 (l/T2) m/sec 2

A number of such horizontal lines are drawn corresponding to different periods and the
respective values of l are found and tabulated.

Period CE DF CE + DF l/T2
T l = -----------

Average l/T2 = …..

Using the average value of l/T2 the acceleration due to gravity g is calculated.
The radius of gyration: In the graph A and B are the points corresponding to the minimum
period. The distance AB is measured. Then K the radius of gyration about axis through the centre
of gravity is given by K = AB/2
