Assignment 1

Week 1:

Question 1: For a=20 and b=-20:

1. Find their mid-point.

20+(−20)
M(a,b) = = 0
2

2. If c is mid-point of a and b, and e is midpoint of b and c, find e.

A= 20

B= -20

C= 0
−20+0
E=? m(b,c) = = − 10
2

3. Calculate d(a,b) and d(a,c).

D(a,b) = |20 - (-20)| = 40

D(a,c) = |20 - (0) |= 20

Question 2: For A(1,-1), B(-2,3), C(-3,0), D(0,4), E(5,5) and F(-3,-4).

1. Locate all of them on 2-dimensional space.

2. Calculate d(A,B).

2
D(A,B)= √(1 − (−2)) + (−1 − 3)2 = √9 + 16 = 5

3. Find the midpoint of A and F.

1+(−3) −1+(−4)
Mp(A,F) = ( , ) = (−1, − 2.5)
2 2

1. Write the slope-intercept form of the equation of the line that passes through the
point (-2, 1) and is

y=mx+b

6x+3y=5 y=−2x+35

M= -2

(A) parallel to the line 6x + 3y = 5

y−y1 =m(x−x1 )
y−1=−2(x+2)
y=−2x−3

(B) perpendicular to the line 6x + 3y = 5

The slope of the given line is −2, so the perpendicular slope is the negative reciprocal of
−2:

M= ½
Points (-2,1)
y−1=½ (x+2)

y=½ x+2

1. Use completing the square to find the center and radius of the circle with equation:

𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 𝑦 2 − 2𝑦 − 3 = 0

𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 𝑦 2 − 2𝑦 = 3

(𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4) + (𝑦 2 − 2𝑦 + 1) = 3 + 4 + 1

(𝑥 − 2)2 + (𝑦 − 1)2 = 8

Therefore:

• Center: (2, 1)

• Radius:√8 = 2√2
COST ANALYSIS A video production company is planning to produce an instructional CD.
The producer estimates that it will cost $24,900 to produce the CD and $5 per unit to copy
and distribute the CD. The budget for this project is $62,000. How many CDs can be
produced without exceeding the budget?

• Fixed cost = $24,900 (one-time production cost)

• Variable cost per CD = $5 (copy + distribute per unit)
• Total budget = $62,000

24,900+5x≤62,000

5x≤62,000−24,900

5x≤37,100

x≤7,420

1. 2y + x>2
3y ≤ 6

Inequality 1:
2y + x > 2
1
⇒ 2𝑦 ≻ 𝑥 + 2 ⇒ 𝑦 ≻ 𝑥 + 1
2

Inequality 2:
3𝑦 ≤ 6 ⇒ 𝑦 ≤ 2

Week 2:

Indicate whether each set in Problems 13-18 defines a function.

Find the domain and range of each function.

1. 1(2, 4), (3, 6), (4, 8), (5, 10);

• Function? Yes, each input (x-value) has exactly one output.

• Domain: {2, 3, 4, 5}

• Range: {4, 6, 8, 10}

2. {(-1, 4), (0, 3), (1, 2), (2, 1)

• Function? Yes, although (2, 1) is repeated, it has the same output so it’s still a function.

• Domain: {-1, 0, 1, 2}
• Range: {1, 2, 3, 4}

3. For f(x) = x* - 2x, find

f(x) = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥
A. f(1) = 12 − 2(1) = 1 − 2 = −1
B. f(-4) = (−4)2 − 2(−4) = 16 + 8 = 24

C.
• f(2) = 22 − 2(2) = 4 − 4 = 0
• f(-1) = (−1)2 − 2(−1) = 1 + 2 = 3
• 𝑓(2) ⋅ 𝑓(−1) = 0 ⋅ 3 = 0

D.
• f(0) = 02 − 2(0) = 0
• f(3) = 32 − 2(3) = 9 − 6 = 3
𝑓(0) 0
• =3=0
𝑓(3)

4. Indicate whether each function is even, odd, or neither:

(A) f(x) = x + 6x

𝑓(−𝑥) = −𝑥 5 − 6𝑥 = −𝑓(𝑥) → 𝑂𝑑𝑑

(B) g(t) = t* + 31

𝑔(−𝑡) = (−𝑡)4 + 3(−𝑡)2 = 𝑡 4 + 3𝑡 2 = 𝑔(𝑡) → 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑛

(C) h(z) = 2 + 4z

ℎ(−𝑧) = −𝑧 5 + 4𝑧 2 ≠ ℎ(𝑧)𝑎𝑛𝑑 ≠ −ℎ(𝑧) → 𝑁𝑒𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟

1. The area of a rectangle is 64 square inches. Express the perimeter Pas a function of
the width w and state the domain.
Area = 64, and width = w

Let length be l. Then:

64
• lw = 64 → 𝑙 = 𝑤

64
• Perimeter: 𝑃 = 2(𝑙 + 𝑤) = 2 ( 𝑤 + 𝑤)

• Domain: w > 0

2. The perimeter of a rectangle is 50 inches. Express the area A as a function of the

width w and state the domain.
Perimeter = 50, and width = w
• 2(w + l) = 50 → w + l = 25 → l = 25 - w
• Area: 𝐴 = 𝑙𝑤 = 𝑤(25 − 𝑤) = 25𝑤 − 𝑤 2
• Domain: 0 < w < 25
