2 Product Introduction
2.1 Overview
Functions
The potential induced degradation (PID) module is used to prevent PV module
output power degradation caused by the PID effect in a PV power system. The PID
module injects voltage between the phase wire and the PE cable of the isolation
transformer to adjust the voltage between PV+ or PV– of the PV module and the
ground to avoid the PID effect, thereby improving energy yields and increasing
revenue.
The PID module must work with inverters of the Company and SmartLogger and
is preinstalled in the Smart Array Controller (SACU).
It can automatically switch the output status based on the inverter status, and
shut down for protection if a fault occurs.
After the PID module starts properly, it provides smart insulation monitoring. You
need to purchase a license to use this function.
Features
The PID module supports double-winding transformers and double-split
transformers. It features centralized compensation, automatic output control, and
easy installation, commissioning, and maintenance.
● Supporting double-winding transformers and double-split transformers
Each SACU can house two PID modules. For a double-split transformer, two
PID modules can meet the requirement for avoiding the PID effect in the PV
power system.
● Centralized compensation
The PID module supports the 1000 V DC, 1100 V DC, and 1500 V DC inverter
systems. However, the smart insulation monitoring function of the PID
module applies only to the 1500 V DC inverter system. If a double-winding
transformer is used, the maximum DC capacity for a single PID module is 10
MW. If a double-split transformer is used, the maximum DC capacity for two
PID modules is 16 MW. All PV modules of the inverters connected to the same
PID module can be compensated simultaneously.
● Automatic output control
– The PID module automatically starts when the inverter exports power to
the power grid in the daytime. The PID module injects voltage between
the phase wire and the PE cable of the isolation transformer to adjust the
voltage between PV+ or PV– and ground to avoid the PID effect.
– The PID module enters standby mode automatically after the inverter
stops exporting power to the power grid at night.
NOTE
The PID module works properly when the inverter exports power to the power grid after
the reactive power output at night is enabled.
● Easy installation and commissioning
– The PID module has been wired when it is preinstalled in the SACU.
– The built-in commissioning mode enables commissioning over the
SmartLogger embedded WebUI, SUN2000 app, or FusionSolar app. You
can also query the running information, active alarms, and performance
data of the PID module, upgrade the firmware of the PID module, export
logs, and set running parameters for the PID module.
Communicatio Blinking green fast The PID module is receiving data over
n indicator (on for 0.5s and then RS485.
off for 0.5s)
NOTE
● Local maintenance refers to operations performed after a USB flash drive or Bluetooth
module is inserted into the USB port of the PID module. For example, data can be
imported or exported using a USB flash drive.
● If a fault occurs during local maintenance, the fault/maintenance indicator shows the
local maintenance state first. After the USB flash drive or Bluetooth module is removed,
the indicator shows the fault state.

Figure 2-8 Conceptual diagram for the scenario with a double-split transformer
ground insulation resistance of the system. When an insulation fault occurs in the
system, the PID module detects that the calculated insulation resistance is lower
than the alarm or warning threshold, and reports an alarm to the SmartLogger.
After receiving the alarm from the PID module, the SmartLogger triggers
protection. The DC and AC sides of the Company's Smart String Energy Storage
System (ESS) are not isolated. Therefore, the PID module can detect the insulation
resistance on the AC and DC sides.
Figure 2-10 Conceptual diagram for the scenario with a double-split transformer
For details about the working principles of the SACU, see the SmartACU2000D Smart Array
Controller User Manual (With PID Modules).
NOTE
System Requirements
● System isolation requirement: The PID module must be used in an isolated
system. The AC and DC sides of an inverter are not grounded. Therefore,
when the PID module is applied to a low-voltage power grid, an isolation
transformer must be used.
● Application scenario requirement: If a double-winding transformer is used,
select the SACU with one PID module. If a double-split transformer is used,
select the SACU with two PID modules.
● Array requirements: When the PID module is used in a PV array consisting of
SUN2000s (in the scenario with a double-winding transformer, the DC
capacity of the PV array is less than or equal to 10 MW; in the scenario with a
double-split transformer, the DC capacity of the PV array is less than or equal
to 16 MW), PV modules in the PV array must be of the same type.
● Functional earthing (FE) requirement: The FE cable of the PID module should
connect to the PE bar on the low-voltage side of the transformer station and
be grounded reliably.
3 Electrical Connections
DANGER
Before installing cables, ensure that the upstream and downstream switches for
the PID module are turned off and the PID module is powered off.
WARNING
NOTE
● The cable colors shown in cable connection schematic diagrams are for reference only.
Select cables according to local cable specifications.
● Open the maintenance compartment door of the PID module before connecting cables.
The PID module is preinstalled in the SACU. The PE cable, RS485 communications
cable, and three-phase AC power cable for the PID module are preinstalled.
● Electrical and extra low voltage (ELV) cables must be routed according to the
requirements and in compliance with the cable routing plan. Power cables
and signal cables should be bound separately.
● Both ends of cables should be bound with a label that is easy to understand
and faces outward.
● Cable ties should be neatly cut without sharp edges, evenly distributed, bound
to a proper strength, and fastened towards the same direction.
● The bundled cables should be close to each other, straight, and neat.
● The redundant cables should be coiled neatly for identification.
● Cables should not be overly bent to avoid damaging the cable cores.
● Cables should not be tied where they bend.

Context
The main function of the IMD is to monitor the ground insulation resistance of the
cables in the system. When the resistance is less than a certain value, an alarm is
generated and the corresponding protection actions are performed. When the IMD
function is enabled, the PID module calculates the ground impedance of the PV
system based on the built-in voltage and current detection circuit and detection
algorithm. When the ground impedance is less than the preset value, the PID
module generates an alarm and performs protection actions.
Procedure
Step 1 Remove the terminal block from the PID-DO port.
NOTE
You can use a flat-head insulated screwdriver to remove the terminal block.
Step 2 Connect one end of the cable to the terminal block and use a flat-head insulated
screwdriver to tighten the screw on the terminal.
