SmartPID2000
User Manual 2 Product Introduction

2 Product Introduction

2.1 Overview
Functions
The potential induced degradation (PID) module is used to prevent PV module
output power degradation caused by the PID effect in a PV power system. The PID
module injects voltage between the phase wire and the PE cable of the isolation
transformer to adjust the voltage between PV+ or PV– of the PV module and the
ground to avoid the PID effect, thereby improving energy yields and increasing
revenue.
The PID module must work with inverters of the Company and SmartLogger and
is preinstalled in the Smart Array Controller (SACU).
It can automatically switch the output status based on the inverter status, and
shut down for protection if a fault occurs.
After the PID module starts properly, it provides smart insulation monitoring. You
need to purchase a license to use this function.

Features
The PID module supports double-winding transformers and double-split
transformers. It features centralized compensation, automatic output control, and
easy installation, commissioning, and maintenance.
● Supporting double-winding transformers and double-split transformers
Each SACU can house two PID modules. For a double-split transformer, two
PID modules can meet the requirement for avoiding the PID effect in the PV
power system.
● Centralized compensation
The PID module supports the 1000 V DC, 1100 V DC, and 1500 V DC inverter
systems. However, the smart insulation monitoring function of the PID
module applies only to the 1500 V DC inverter system. If a double-winding
transformer is used, the maximum DC capacity for a single PID module is 10
MW. If a double-split transformer is used, the maximum DC capacity for two

SmartPID2000
User Manual 2 Product Introduction

PID modules is 16 MW. All PV modules of the inverters connected to the same
PID module can be compensated simultaneously.
● Automatic output control
– The PID module automatically starts when the inverter exports power to
the power grid in the daytime. The PID module injects voltage between
the phase wire and the PE cable of the isolation transformer to adjust the
voltage between PV+ or PV– and ground to avoid the PID effect.
– The PID module enters standby mode automatically after the inverter
stops exporting power to the power grid at night.
NOTE

The PID module works properly when the inverter exports power to the power grid after
the reactive power output at night is enabled.
● Easy installation and commissioning
– The PID module has been wired when it is preinstalled in the SACU.
– The built-in commissioning mode enables commissioning over the
SmartLogger embedded WebUI, SUN2000 app, or FusionSolar app. You
can also query the running information, active alarms, and performance
data of the PID module, upgrade the firmware of the PID module, export
logs, and set running parameters for the PID module.

SmartPID2000
User Manual 2 Product Introduction

2.3 Working Principles

A PID module is used in a PV array that comprises SUN2000s and is often installed
in an SACU. In the scenario with a double-winding transformer, the DC capacity of
the PV array should be less than or equal to 10 MW. In the scenario with a
double-split transformer, the DC capacity of the PV array should be less than or
equal to 16 MW.
The PID module connects to a three-phase (A, B, and C) AC power cable, FE cable,
and RS485 communications cable. The PID module communicates with the
SmartLogger over an RS485 communications cable. The SmartLogger collects the
voltages of all inverters and transfers the voltages to the PID module. Then, the
PID module injects voltage between the phase wire and the PE wire of the
isolation transformer to adjust the voltage between PV+ or PV– of the PV module
and the ground until the voltage between PV+ and the ground is less than or
equal to 0 or the voltage between PV– and the ground is greater than or equal to
0, thereby suppressing the PID effect.

2.3.1 PV-Only Scenario

The PID module adopts the grid virtual midpoint injection (N/PE compensation)
mode to control the voltage between PV modules and the ground, preventing the
PID effect on PV modules.

Scenario with a Double-Split Transformer

2.3.2 ESS-Only Scenario

The PID module adopts the grid virtual midpoint injection (N/PE compensation)
mode to inject voltage between the phase wires and PE wire of the winding of the
transformer station. The built-in voltage and current detection circuit works with
the detection algorithm to calculate the ground insulation resistance of the
system. When an insulation fault occurs in the system, the PID module detects
that the calculated insulation resistance is lower than the alarm or warning
threshold, and reports an alarm to the SmartLogger. After receiving the alarm
from the PID module, the SmartLogger triggers protection. The DC and AC sides of
the Company's Smart String Energy Storage System (ESS) are not isolated.
Therefore, the PID module can detect the insulation resistance on the AC and DC
sides.

NOTE

● Components in the dashed-line box are optional.

● In the transformer station, the knife fuse switch serves as the three-phase power switch.

System Requirements
● System isolation requirement: The PID module must be used in an isolated
system. The AC and DC sides of an inverter are not grounded. Therefore,
when the PID module is applied to a low-voltage power grid, an isolation
transformer must be used.
● Application scenario requirement: If a double-winding transformer is used,
select the SACU with one PID module. If a double-split transformer is used,
select the SACU with two PID modules.
● Array requirements: When the PID module is used in a PV array consisting of
SUN2000s (in the scenario with a double-winding transformer, the DC
capacity of the PV array is less than or equal to 10 MW; in the scenario with a
double-split transformer, the DC capacity of the PV array is less than or equal
to 16 MW), PV modules in the PV array must be of the same type.
● Functional earthing (FE) requirement: The FE cable of the PID module should
connect to the PE bar on the low-voltage side of the transformer station and
be grounded reliably.

SmartPID2000
User Manual 2 Product Introduction

● AC power cable requirement 1:

The AC power cables refer to those from the inverter to the AC combiner box,
from the AC combiner box to the transformer station, from the transformer
station to the SACU, inside the AC combiner box, inside the transformer
station, and directly or indirectly from the transformer station to the busbar
on the low-voltage side of the transformer station.
– When the rated three-phase AC input voltage of the SACU is 800 V,
ensure that the rated operating voltage of the AC power cable to ground
is greater than or equal to 1000 V AC.
– When the rated three-phase AC input voltage of the SACU is 500 V,
ensure that the rated operating voltage of the AC power cable to ground
is greater than or equal to 600 V AC.
● AC power cable requirement 2: The AC power cable from the low-voltage side
of the transformer station to the SACU must be at least 3 m long. A four-core
outdoor armored cable with a cross-sectional area of 10 mm2 is
recommended.
● AC power cable connection requirement: The PID module must be used in a
three-phase, three-wire system, and cables must be connected in the phase
sequence of A, B, and C. If the neutral wire is connected, there is a risk of high
voltage. Therefore, the neutral wire must not connect to the inverter, AC
combiner box, or AC power distribution cabinet. If the low-voltage side of the
isolation transformer uses star connection, the neutral wire must not be
connected or grounded, and isolation protection measures should be taken.
● Requirements for the surge protective devices (SPDs) on the low-voltage side
of the AC combiner box and transformer station:
– When the rated three-phase AC input voltage of the SACU is 800 V, SPDs
are connected in 3+1 mode. All SPDs use varistors and no gas discharge
tube is allowed. The maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) of each
SPD should be greater than or equal to 680 V AC.
– When the rated three-phase AC input voltage of the SACU is 500 V, SPDs
are connected in 3+1 mode. All SPDs use varistors and no gas discharge
tube is allowed. The maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) of each
SPD should be greater than or equal to 385 V AC.
● Knife fuse switch requirements: In the scenario with a double-winding
transformer, one knife fuse switch should be reserved for the busbar on the
low-voltage side of the transformer station. In the scenario with a double-split
transformer, one knife fuse switch should be reserved for each low-voltage
winding main busbar on the low-voltage side of the transformer station. This
power branch connects to the SACU and injects voltage to it. This power
branch must directly connect to the busbar on the low-voltage side of the
transformer station, and must not connect to the isolation transformer
embedded in the transformer station.
● Power grid type requirement: The PID module can only be used in the IT
system.

3.2 (Optional) Connecting to an External IMD

Perform this step if the insulation monitor device (IMD) is deployed in the actual
network and needs to be used to detect the insulation resistance between the PID
module and the ground. Otherwise, skip this step.
The cable is delivered with the smart transformer station (STS). One end of the
cable has been connected to the IMD in the STS, and the other end is reserved for
connecting to the DO port on the PID module.

Context
The main function of the IMD is to monitor the ground insulation resistance of the
cables in the system. When the resistance is less than a certain value, an alarm is
generated and the corresponding protection actions are performed. When the IMD
function is enabled, the PID module calculates the ground impedance of the PV
system based on the built-in voltage and current detection circuit and detection
algorithm. When the ground impedance is less than the preset value, the PID
module generates an alarm and performs protection actions.

Procedure
Step 1 Remove the terminal block from the PID-DO port.

Category Parameter Description

Compensation Specifies the PV-ground compensation offset voltage after

offset voltage the PID module works stably in automatic mode. The
absolute value ranges from 0 V to 500 V, and the default
value is 50 V.
● If PV module compensation voltage direction is set to
PV– po, this parameter indicates the positive voltage
between the PV– and the ground. The compensation
range is 0 V to +500 V.
● If PV module compensation voltage direction is set to PV
+ ne, this parameter indicates the negative voltage
between the PV+ and the ground. The compensation
range is –500 V to 0 V.
● If the Compensation offset voltage is set to 500 V, the
PID module provides the maximum output to enhance
the voltage compensation effect. The output voltage
amplitude of the PID module is automatically capped to
ensure the safety of a PV plant. The output voltage
amplitude is also related to the maximum system DC-to-
ground withstand voltage and maximum output voltage.
● After this parameter is set, wait until the PID module
runs properly and use a multimeter to measure the
voltage between the PV input terminal of the inverter
and the ground. (PV– po: the voltage between the PV–
and the ground is greater than or equal to 0 V; PV+ ne:
the voltage between the PV+ and the ground is less than
or equal to 0 V.)

Output voltage Specifies the step-up voltage when the working mode is
(manual) manual. The value of this parameter ranges from 0 V to 800
V.
It is recommended that the commissioning output voltage
for a 1000 V/1100 V inverter be set to a value ranging from
50 V to 400 V, and that the commissioning output voltage
for the 1500 V inverter be set to a value ranging from 50 V
to 600 V.
NOTE
After this parameter is set and the output from the PID module
becomes stable, use a multimeter that is set to the DC position to
measure the three-phase (A, B, and C) voltages of the power grid to
the ground, and check whether the voltages are the same as the
configured values.
