Assignment#1

The document outlines an assignment consisting of five problems related to electrical engineering concepts, including calculations for a single-phase full bridge converter, a three-phase full converter, a half-bridge inverter, a full-bridge converter with PWM, and a shunt-compensated transmission line. Each problem requires specific calculations based on given parameters such as voltage, frequency, load resistance, and inductance. The assignment aims to assess the understanding of power electronics and circuit analysis.

Assignment # 1

1. A single phase full bridge converter with a freewheeling diode feeds an inductive load. The load
resistance is 15.53 ohm and it has a large inductance providing constant and ripple free dc current.
The input to the converter is from an ideal 230 V, 50 Hz single phase source. For a firing angle of
60 degree, calculate the average value of diode current.
2. A three-phase full converter is supplied from a three-phase 230-V, 60-Hz supply. The load current
is continuous and has negligible ripple. If the average load current Idc = 150 A and the commutating
inductance Lc = 0.1 mH, determine the overlap angle when (a) α = 10°, (b) α = 30°, and (c) α = 60°.
3. The half-bridge inverter circuit shown in Fig. 1. has a load resistance of 10 Ω and an inductance
of 100 mH. The centre-tapped battery has 20 V per section. The inverter frequency is 100 Hz.
Determine the value of load current i(t) at, (a) 3 ms after Q1 switches ON and (b) 4ms after Q2
switches ON

4. In the full-bridge converter circuit of Fig.2, Vd=300 V, ma=0.8, mf =39, and the fundamental
frequency is 47 Hz. Calculate the rms values of fundamental-frequency voltage and some of the
dominant harmonics in voltage vo if a PWM bipolar voltage-switching is used.

5. The particulars of the shunt-compensated transmission line are V = 220 V, f = 60 Hz, X = 1 ohm,
and active power P = 55 KW. Find (a) the phase angle, (b) the line current I, and (c) the reactive
power supplied by shunt compensator.
