Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence
Let me share with you a real life case of artificial Intelligence that has proved to be a boon to
humanity. AI assisted robotic surgery wherein a surgeon named Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi, decided
to use an AI-powered robot called Mazor X Stealth Edition to assist him in the surgery for his
patient Peter Drier, a 59-year-old man from New York who suffered from a rare spinal condition
called cervical spondylotic myelopathy. This surgery needed high precision and skill which is
beyond human reach. This robot combined 3D planning software, image guidance, and robotic
arm technology to help surgeons perform spinal surgery with more accuracy and efficiency. And
today, the patient has regained his mobility and quality of life, and returned to his normal
activities within a few weeks.
Another example of AI is a New technology used by the Tesla Company that enables self-
driving cars that can navigate complex traffic situations and reduce accidents risks. AI optimizes
routes, schedules and facilitates smart mobility. Sometimes people get confused between
automation and AI. AI is nothing but pattern recognition and gives you precise data.
It is not only space but agriculture is also not left untouched. AI can help increase
crop yields and reduce environmental impact. For example, AI can assist in soil
analysis, pest detection, irrigation management, crop harvesting, and food
processing.
Now talking about the other side of AI
In 2018, Amazon scrapped an AI recruiting tool that was supposed to automate the
hiring process. The tool was found to be biased against women, as it favored
resumes that contained words such as "executed" or "captured", which were more
likely to be used by male applicants. The tool also penalized resumes that
mentioned women's colleges or other female-related terms. The bias was caused by
the fact that the tool was trained on data from the past 10 years, which reflected the
male-dominated tech industry. One such lawsuit was faced by Apple Company in
2019 wherein a student of New York claimed that he was falsely arrested due to a
faulty facial recognition system. The system was used by Apple to identify
suspects who had stolen Apple products from its stores. However, the system
mistakenly matched the student's photo with the photo of one of the thieves. The
student spent a night in jail and had to appear in court several times before the case
was dismissed. the lawsuit alleged that Apple's facial recognition system was
unreliable and prone to errors.
Overall, AI has the potential to transform industries, enhance human capabilities, and address
global challenges, making it a crucial area of development in modern technology.
THANK YOU! !
