Module This module develops the skills required of a professional mathematician,

summary including reading, thinking and working with mathematical and statistical
(includes ideas, and programming. In lectures, workshops and group tutorials, you’ll
indicative develop confidence and accuracy with foundational concepts and techniques,
content) extending these to new topics which are essential for successful further study.

You’ll study topics such as:

Functions, solving equations and complex numbers

Calculus, analytical and numerical techniques for basic differential

equations

Matrices and linear algebra

Core concepts of statistics

Probability and inferential statistics

Programming

teaching Hallam Model throughout.
summary

The module provides a bridge between school and university mathematics,

revisiting familiar material in a University context with help and support from
tutors in person and via online systems, allowing students to thrive as they
develop their approaches to key mathematical and statistical skills and
techniques. Students will engage with learning through teaching in lectures
and guided workshops. They will by doing in tutorials and workshops and
online using the virtual learning environment, and independent study. Students
will be introduced to industry leading software to enable them to experience
real world challenges.

Students will receive feedback in weekly tutorials and seminars, and by

completing exercises as part of independent study.

The module materials and instructional methods are designed to

accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities. Visual aids, manipulatives,
and real-world examples are incorporated to make abstract concepts more
tangible and relatable. Collaborative learning activities are integrated into the
course structure, promoting peer interaction, teamwork, and the opportunity to
learn from different perspectives. Culturally responsive teaching is
emphasised, incorporating culturally relevant contexts and examples to make
mathematics meaningful and applicable to students from various cultural
backgrounds.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, you will be able to:

Demonstrate a reasonable understanding of appropriate mathematical and statistical knowledge

and a reasonable level of skill in calculation and manipulation within this body of knowledge;

Comprehend problems, formulate them mathematically, obtain solutions (showing judgement in

selection and application of the techniques used), and drawing valid inferences from these;

Begin to think critically and apply problem-solving skills to problems arising in mathematics &
statistics, and in the context of other disciplines or applications.

Demonstrate familiarity with at least one programming language and competence with other
appropriate mathematical and statistical technology;

Apply improving digital capabilities, including retrieval of information and assessment of its
:
veracity, and the ability to employ digital tools to support mathematical reasoning and
communication.
