Proof Integral Test

The document outlines the Integral Test for convergence of series, stating that for a positive, continuous, and decreasing function f(x) derived from a sequence {an}, the sum of the areas under the curve can be compared to the sum of the series. If the integral of f(x) diverges, then the series Σan also diverges, and if the integral converges, then the series converges as well. The document provides graphical representations to illustrate the relationship between the series and the area under the curve.

Proving Integral Test For Convergence of Series

Take a sequence {𝑎𝑛 }∞ 𝑛=1 such that we can derive a function f(x) where
𝑓 𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛
Where f is positive, continuous and decreasing.

GRAPH: 𝑎𝑛 from the left end point or upper bound.

1 We see take the sum of the areas of each rectangle which
represents the sum of the sequence
Sum of Areas = 𝑙𝑖 ∗ 𝑏𝑖 = 𝑎1 ∗ 1 + 𝑎2 ∗ 1 + … + 𝑎𝑛 ∗ 1

= σ∞ ∞
𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛 ∗ 1 = σ𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛

‫׬‬1 𝑓 𝑥 𝑑𝑥

Since,

5
1 𝑛=1

Then, if ‫׬‬1 𝑓
𝑥 𝑑𝑥 diverges,
σ∞
𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛 will also diverge.
