SECTION B

9. A shop owner is checking the performances of the salespeople in the shop. The performance of a

salesperson in a month will be treated as good if he/she makes at least 2 sales of $1 000 or above

in that month. Anson is a salesman of the shop. Based on previous records, the number of sales of

$1 000 or above made by him in a month follows a Poisson distribution with a mean of 0.9.

(a) Find the probability that the performance of Anson is treated as good in a particular month.

(2 marks)

(b) To reward the salespeople with good performances, the shop owner plans to launch a reward

scheme in the coming 3 months. Two proposals are made:

Proposal I:
Number of months that
the performance of a
3 2 1 0
salesperson is treated as
good

Reward $1 000 $450 $200 $0

Proposal II:
Total number of sales of $1 000 or
above made by a salesperson in 3 6 or more Otherwise
months
Reward $k $0

Given that the expected amount of the reward obtained by Anson will be higher if Proposal II

is adopted, find the least integral value of k. (4 marks)

(c) Andy is another salesman of the shop, and the number of sales of $1 000 or above made by

him in a month follows a Poisson distribution with a mean of 1.2. It is known that the numbers

of such sales made by Anson and Andy are independent.

(i) Find the probability that there is at most 1 sale of $1 000 or above in total made by

them in a particular month.

(ii) Given that there is at most 1 sale of $1 000 or above in total made by them in a

particular month, find the probability that such sale is made by Andy. (5 marks)

mean of μ units and a standard deviation of 0.8 units.
