The EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 was a peaceful revolution in the
Philippines that put an end to President Ferdinand Marcos’ extended
presidency. Millions of Filipinos congregated along Epifanio de los Santos
Avenue (EDSA) from February 22 to 25, demanding change. They were fed
up with corruption, abuse, and dictatorship. They did not resort to violence
but rather prayed, sung, and distributed flowers to troops, persuading them
not to kill civilians. The Catholic Church, with the leadership of Cardinal Sin,
became a strong contributor to peaceful marches. Marcos would eventually
escape to Hawaii, while Corazon Aquino took his place as the new president.
This phenomenon taught the strength of unity and peace, and numerous
other nations got inspired to push for democracy.
