Calculate the values 𝑌̅, Y, S2Y, CY. State the parameter vector. Suppose the following samples
are selected: S {2, 7, 1, 2}, s (3, 5, 7, 10). Find v(S), v(s), n(S), n(s). Write the values of y1, y2, …,
y4 in each case. Find 𝑦̅, s2y , y, cy .
2. Let N=3, n=2 and s1 = (1,2), s2 = (1,3) and s3 = (2,3) be the samples each drawn with equal
probability. Consider the estimator e(s,Y) such that
e1(s,Y) = (2/3)Y1 + (1/2) Y2, e2(s,Y) = (1/3) Y1 + (1/2) Y3, e3(s,Y) = (1/2) Y2 + (1/2) Y3
Show that e is unbiased for 𝑌̅. For Y1 = 1, Y2 = 4, Y3 = 6, v(e) < v(𝑦̅). For this population find
the precision of 𝑦̅ with respect to e.
4. In a survey of industries, after a sample of 155 factories was surveyed out of a population of
2359 units, it was decided to get an estimate for the cycle tyre and tube manufacturing
industry separately. Given that 17 units in the sample belong to this industry with ∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝑦𝑖 =
5346, ∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝑦𝑖2 = 1898472, find an estimate of population total for this domain along with its
standard error.
