Sheet 3

The document discusses the protection of generator windings using a percentage differential relay and outlines a scenario to determine if the relay will trip based on specific current values and transformer ratios. It also describes the setup of relay Rab to protect line AB and back up other lines, requiring calculations for zone settings and associated time delays. The document includes figures to illustrate the scenarios and calculations involved.

Sheet (3)

Differential and Distance Protection

1) The winding of a generator is protected by a percentage differential relay as shown in

Fig. (1), if a fault occurs near the neutral point of the generator winding with the currents
passing in the two sides as shown in Fig. (1). The transformation ratio of the two current
transformers is 1000/5. The slope of the operation curve is 12%. Determine whether the
relay will trip or not. In case of the relay will not trip, determine the value of I 2 that will
make the relay trips provided that the value of I1 is the same as in Fig. (1).

Fig. (1)

2) For the system shown in Fig. (2), the relay Rab is to be set to protect line AB, and back
up the lines BC, CD and BE. The impedances of the lines are as shown in Ohms.
Find the different zones settings for relays R ab and Rbc in Ohms and indicate the values of
the time delays associated with each zone.
