Lesson 3

Exponential Functions,
Equation and
Exponential Inequality
Learn about It!

Exponential Function
1 Is a function involving exponential expression showing a relationship between the
independent variable x and dependent variable y or f(x).
y=f(x)
the exponential function f with base a is denoted by 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎 𝑥 , where a > 0,
a ≠ 1 and x is any real numbers.

Example:
1 𝑥
𝑓 = 2𝑥 , 𝑔 𝑥 = 3−𝑥 ,and ℎ(𝑥) = are examples of

1
exponential functions with bases of 2, 3, and respectively.

Exponential Equation
2 is an equation involving exponential expression that can be solved for all the x
satisfying the equation.

Example:
𝟑𝟐𝒙 = 𝟖𝟏

Exponential Inequality
3 an inequality involving exponential expression that can be solved for all x values
satisfying the inequality. (≤,≥,<,>)

Example:
𝒙𝟓 < 𝟏𝟓𝒙
Try It!

Classify whether it is an exponential function,

equation or exponential inequality.

𝑥
2. 36 = 6

3. 5x > 𝑥
4. 15x < 𝑥 5

Solving Exponential Equations

L4
If 𝑏 = 𝑏 , then n = m
𝑛 𝑚

Example: Solve the equation 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒

Step 1: rewrite each side of the equation as an exponential
expression having the same base.
𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒
𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟒𝟑
Step 2: Use the law of exponents. If 𝑏 𝑛 = 𝑏 𝑚 , then n = m
If 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟒𝟑 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏
𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏 = 𝟑
Learn about It!

Example: Solve the equation 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒

Step 2: Use the law of exponents. If 𝑏 𝑛 = 𝑏 𝑚 , then n = m
If 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟒𝟑 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏
𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏 = 𝟑
𝟐𝒙 = 𝟑 + 𝟏
𝟐𝒙 𝟒
=
𝟐 𝟐
𝒙=𝟐
Thus, 𝑥 = 2 is the solution of the equation 42𝑥−1 = 64
Learn about It!

Example: Solve the equation 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒

Step 3: check the solution by substituting it to the equation.
𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒
𝟒𝟐(𝟐)−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒
𝟒𝟒−𝟏 = 𝟔𝟒
𝟒𝟑 = 𝟔𝟒
𝟔𝟒 = 𝟔𝟒
Try It!

Example 1: Solve 25𝑥 = 42𝑥−1

Solution: Checking:
𝟐𝟓𝒙 = 𝟒𝟐𝒙−𝟏 𝟓𝒙 = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐
𝟐𝟓𝒙 = 𝟐𝟐(𝟐𝒙−𝟏) 𝟓 −𝟐 = 𝟒 −𝟐 − 𝟐
𝟓𝒙 = 𝟐 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏 −𝟏𝟎 = −𝟖 − 𝟐
𝟓𝒙 = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐 −𝟏𝟎 = −𝟏𝟎
𝟓𝒙 − 𝟒𝒙 = −𝟐
𝒙 = −𝟐
Let’s Practice!

Group Practice:
Solve the following exponential equation (5 points each).

1. 𝟓(𝒙+𝟐) = 𝟏𝟐𝟓𝟐𝒙
2. 𝟓(𝟑−𝟐𝒙) = 𝟓−𝒙
3. 𝟑(𝟏−𝟐𝒙) = 𝟐𝟒𝟑
4. 𝟐(𝟐𝒙+𝟐) = 𝟐𝟑𝒙
