Simulation of Characteristics of DC Shunt Motor: Shrikanth-230002071

The document discusses the characteristics of a DC shunt motor, focusing on the relationship between speed, torque, and armature current. It highlights three key operating characteristics: speed-armature current, torque-armature current, and speed-torque. The document also explains how increasing torque leads to a decrease in speed due to the effects of armature reaction and flux saturation.

Simulation of
Characteristics of DC
Shunt Motor
In a dc motor, emf Ea generated in the armature is called back or
counter emf and can be represented as Eb.

• For dc motors, the supply voltage is usually constant and the

quantities of common interest are speed, torque etc.

• Three important operating characteristics are:

1)Speed-armature current characteristics

2)Torque-armature current characteristics
3)Speed-torque characteristics.
Equations Used : As the torque
increases, speed
drops.
• For larger Te, larger
Ia is required which
reduces flux due to
saturation
and armature
reaction.
• With increase of Te,
flux is reduced,
Te/flux increases at a
faster rate and
the speed drops
more rapidly.
