Formal Elements Player
This lesson will cover the most important elements of 2D platformer game and various aspects of
designing a platformer game
Formal Elements
1. Player
Invitation to play
The player is invited to play by a classic starting menu with a “Start” option that launches
the game
● Number of players
Having to investigate the sewers of New York City after strange creatures have been appearing
down there.
In single-player mode, it’s the player versus the game. In multiplayer/online multiplayer, it’s a
player versus another player.
2. Objective
Objective archetypes
The objective of the game is to defeat all of the enemies in each phase.
3. Procedure
Character moves
The player controls the movement of the character using the controller.
The mechanics of Mario Bros. Involve only running and jumping.
Players cannot jump on enemies and squash them, unless they were already turned on
their back.
Each phase is a series of platforms with pipes at each corner of the screen, along with an
object called a “POW” block in the center.
Menu
● The main menu offers players the choice to choose from chronicle mode (story
mode), versus, survival, time attack and team battle.
● The player can turn the sound off by clicking an icon anytime.
● At any level, the player can go back to the main menu by clicking a door icon.
4. Rules
● Phases use wraparound, meaning that enemies and players that go off to
one side will reappear on the opposite side.
5. Resources
Health is the primary resource and when the health of a character runs out, he is knocked
out.
6. Conflicts
The player gains points by defeating multiple enemies consecutively and can participate in a
bonus round to gain more points.
7. Outcome
The outcome or the result of the game depends on the player’s way of playing a game.
Since the player can only win or lose, it’s a zero-sum game.
Dramatic elements
1. Challenge Skills required and elements in the game requiring these skills:
● Dexterity (Eye-hand coordination): The game requires the player to be having really fast
reactions to pull off special moves at the right time and to try and dodge the enemy at the
same time.
● Logic: The player has to take some important decisions while the fight is going on. The
player will have to decide when to use his unique skills as they are limited and can turn a
battle if used properly. Raising Difficulty: The difficulty of the enemies increases as a
character moves forward in the story.
2. Play
Nature of play:
The majority of Mario games falls within the platformer genre, which itself can be
divided into two sub-genres:
side-scrolling
three-dimensional.

The princess toadstool of the mushroom kingdom has been kidnapped by the notorious
King Koopa and the toads of the mushroom kingdom have been held captive in the many
castles of King Koopa.
