Experiment: Protection System Model

Objective:

To study the working of a protection system model and analyze the performance of different

protective relays used in power transmission and distribution networks under various fault

conditions.
Apparatus Required
1. Protection Relays (Overcurrent, Distance, Differential, Directional)

2. Circuit Breaker

3. Current Transformers (CTs) and Potential Transformers (PTs)

4. Load Bank

5. Measuring Instruments (Voltmeter, Ammeter, Wattmeter, Multimeter)

6. Simulation Software (MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, PSCAD)

Theory
A power system protection model is designed to detect and isolate faults rapidly, thereby

safeguarding equipment and maintaining the stability of the power network.

Main types of protection include:

- Overcurrent Protection

- Distance Protection

- Differential Protection

- Directional Protection

These schemes are implemented using relays, circuit breakers, CTs, and PTs.

Each relay works on a particular principle, e.g., overcurrent relay uses inverse-time characteristics to

trip breakers during excessive current flow.

Protection System Diagram
Procedure
1. Setup the protection system model using relays, CTs, PTs, and circuit breaker.

2. Start with no-fault condition and record all normal values.

3. Introduce different fault types (overcurrent, short circuit, ground fault).

4. Observe and record relay operations and breaker status.

5. Calculate trip time, impedance, and performance metrics.

6. Plot performance curves and analyze results.

Observations
Sample observation table:

Fault Type | Fault Current (A) | Relay Operated | Trip Time (ms) | Breaker Status

-------------|--------------------|----------------|----------------|------------------
Calculations
Relay Trip Time (Overcurrent): T = k / ((I / I_pickup)^n - 1)

Impedance: Z = V / I

Protection Efficiency: eta = (Healthy Time / Total Time) * 100

Graphs to Plot
1. Fault Current vs. Relay Trip Time

2. Load vs. System Voltage Drop

3. Fault Impedance vs. Relay Zone Operation

4. Relay Operating Time vs. Fault Distance

Result
The protection system model was successfully tested under various fault conditions. The relays

operated correctly and isolated faults to maintain system stability.

Conclusion
- Overcurrent protection detects excessive current effectively.

- Distance protection provides zone-wise protection for transmission lines.

- Differential protection ensures internal fault detection in transformers and generators.

- Relay coordination is crucial to avoid false trips and enhance system reliability.
Precautions
1. Ensure correct CT and PT connections.

2. Avoid prolonged fault application to prevent equipment damage.

3. Calibrate relay settings before testing.

4. Maintain proper safety protocols during practical work.

Future Scope
- Development of smart grid protection using AI and machine learning.

- Real-time monitoring through SCADA and IoT-based relays.

- Integration of digital protection schemes in microgrids and renewable systems.
